So what actually happens if you dont 'code' a new battery? I need to replace mine but don't have VCDS or Carista. T6 2018 150hp DSG.

If you mean the starter battery, nothing really. It's a "smart" alternator and over time it will learn and adapt its chagring output to suit.

This.
Additionally you may have some nuisances like Start&Stop not working (and no error codes thrown) until your ECU has decided that the new battery is of its liking.

Yes. Starter battery. OK great, not that bothered if start/stop does not work for a while. Only use the van on long trips and never in town so not much call for start/stop anyway.

Of course you should try to get a battery similar to the one that you are going to replace, to better fool the system.. I.e. if you had already an AGM and you replace it with a regular Lead Acid your ECU may try to overcharge it for a while. That may shorten the life of your new battery, long term.
But batteries are strange animals. anyway, and nobody can say how long they last, really.

For sure...the same battery if I can. I guess what I have is the original that came with the van when new.
