Advice needed on EGR sensor position

Should the egt sensor be out like this or should it be all the way in?

We had a weird squealing noise and horrible smells coming from engine bay on our 2019 T6 hl so took it to a garage, mechanic said it was the egt sensor and it had been cross threaded by the last mechanic that replaced our turbo! He got it out and replaced it but the squealing noise has returned and I see the sensor doesn't look right in the pic.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as we are losing our minds.

You will probably get more traction if you provide a more informative title for your thread.

EDIT: Editted title and moved to appropriate sub-forum.

When you say the mech’ replaced it, i’m guessing you mean refitted the same one and not renewed?
From the photo the thread doesn’t look good, I would say it needed the threaded port tapped out and a dienut run down the male thread.
Simply removing a cross threaded steel thread and then screwing back in isn’t good enough without dressing the threads.
If you suspect it’s leaking hang something in the area which will be deflected by the gases like a piece of tape and see if it moves.

Hi, thanks for the reply. Originally he put the original one back in and said it was fine but then the coil and engine lights came on so we took it back and he said we needed a new sensor which is that one in the pic.

Is the tap and die a thing that I can do at home? Just bits costing me £250 every time I take it in!!

I'll do that paper thing as soon as it stops raining.

If you paid the workshop to correct the issue and they’ve left it leaking then they should be fixing it correctly at their cost.

If you have the tools, first you would need to identify the thread size.
Caliper or micrometer.
Thread pitch gauge.
1st tap.
Die nut.

Given the cost of the tools you maybe better off taking it to an engineering workshop.
Before you do anything I would check that it is actually leaking.
