Their guidance on the cambelt is out of date…..ask them to doublecheck with VW!

Not sure about always, but it is certainly the most common cause assuming your symptoms are the same. I guess it could also be the cambelt tensioner too.

The 20k in the original post refers to the time since the cambelt was last changed. My van is also around the 150k mark

Hi, could you tell me whether it has the 5 or 6 speed gearbox - has the cambelt and water pump been changed? DMF / clutch?

So if you were in my shoes would you expect a 80k mileage van to have that done or to be done as part of the purchase? Just working out if I was asking the earth or not!

Hi - it's been serviced annually. We've not had the cam belt done.

Unless you are sick of looking, I'd walk away unless he at least offers something towards the belt being done.

Just adding as i have had a few questions on this Full Service History From VW Van centre Cambelt and water Pump changed @ 30k miles.

Surely the amount they are charging would be noticeable, what i mean is yearly stuff like service & MOT is normally a few hundred quid but add a cambelt and waterpump to that and your into 4 figure sums !!

Cambelt change now advised by VW at 120K, search on here and you'll find lots of info. This brings UK into line with European practice, although should be qualified by regular inspections.
