whining whistling noise from front anyone?

Hi,

I have a 2016 Caravelle, and I am getting what I could only describe as a whining noise from the front. it starts at around 30mph, doesn't get any louder the faster I go but instantly goes below around 30mph.

it is a high pitch noise, almost like wind passing over a roof rack, almost a whistling noise. and it's from outside the van.

I know it's difficult without hearing it but if anyone's had it on there bus they will know exactly what I'm talking about.

vans awesome apart from this. thanks in advance.

I had a similar noise from a car before and it turned out to be the tail of a cable tie that was sticking out from a wheel trim. It was whistling once the car got to a certain speed.

That actually made me lol then. And thanks but it’s not the turbo. It’s due it’s first service so I’ll see what they say. I’m just trying to avoid the usual dealer excuses like “it’s the tyres”

Thanks again.

If you've got standard tyres that came with the van from new, I would ask them to take you out in another vehicle and compare so they cant use that as an excuse.

Hi Anthony. Did you get a solution to this? I have what sounds like the same noise.

Polite nudge to see if the cause was identified? I have exactly the same issue.

Searched for signs of an air whistle with no luck externally. Comes on a 30mph and is high pitch whine or whistle. Possibly air pipes or turbo leaking???

Any feedback welcome.

Sounds like a boost leak.

Follow the route from turbo to intercooler and charge cooler to inlet.

You might need to pressure or smoke test to find the leak.

Thanks. I have contacted a local vw specialist to give all the pipe work a good talking too. It has to be a small air leak somewhere!! Ill update the forum of any news. At least I can stop sticking Gaffer tape all over the front hoping I find the cause.

Lol... Yes, keep us posted.

Gaffer tape won't fix it.... I had a spit pipe on a old BMW 330d, I tried everything including alagramating tape and a line of jubilee clips.... Nothing would hold back the extreme boost pressure. Untill a replacement pipe arrived.

A small split can be repaired with a good thorough clean with brake cleaner and superglue, Loctite 406 works well.
I’ve had repairs last months but better to replace the hose.

Well it appears the noise is a high pitch grind and gearbox related. Black oil and swarf in the oil suggest pooped bearings.

Some form of update. No issues found after a further 1500 models with the gearbox. Noise still there at 30mph to to 45mph. Faint high pitch noise whistle. Damn odd. Im hoping it manifests itself somehow but a full service couldn't locate it.

Ok - I had this noise. As I did more mileage I found the speed at which the noise was apparent varied.
if I drove into a headwind the occurance speed was lower. When I drove back (with a tailwind ) the occurrence speed was higher. so I covered the whole front with cling film. And no noise. So then I progressively uncovered the front until I knew which bit of airflow caused the noise. It was a loose stiffener in the lower part of the bumper, I used some Sikaflex to resolve.
