My water pump smells and tastes dreadful! I replaced the pump and cleaned the system but after only a few days it is as bad again.
I leave the pump submersed in the water container. What am I doing wrong.

Nothing other than not using or changing the water regularly enough.
It needs sterilising, if not in use leave it empty.

Do I let the pump dry out?

Make sure the hose between the pump and tap is opaque as a clear hose will form algae due to the light passing through the hose.

Yes, it should be self priming, if you open the tap with the tank empty the whole line should drain down.
Don’t run the pump dry for too long.
I’m not too sure what ‘dreadful’ means in your first post, if this is brand new equipment you will have an unpleasant plastic taste, in this case it just needs some rinsing and use.
