Hi everyone I have a vw t6 2019 6sped manual and want to change gearbox oil but there is no filler plug! I know vw say oil for life but I want to upgrade the oil anyone have this same problem or know how to refill?

Even if you refilled through the drain plug with a valve and a u tube or pump there would need to be means to vent the air out.
Not sure what a gear oil upgrade is or why you want to do it. I recently changed the gear oil on a 21 year old (208K) A4 for the first time, the oil wasn’t so bad and the gearbox had been working perfectly.

Upgrade to a better oil other than vw oil as my gearbox is notchy first thing until warm

Gearbox code is say I think ,no gearbox oil is for life any thoughts on how to refill?

If there is an oil drain plug it’s a case of filling the new oil through the drain plug, this requires venting the same volume of air as the oil goes in.
Off the top of my head I’d get a replacement drain plug and drill two holes in it, a larger one for filling oil and a smaller on for venting air.
On the vent place a length of hose that will sit above the filled oil level.
Fit the modified plug, fill a measured amount through the bigger hole with an oil gun / syringe. The air will vent through the smaller hole.
Remove the modified plug carefully and quickly fitting the standard plug without loosing oil.

I’m a little surprised there is no fill plug. There is definitely one on my 5sp.

Have you researched / googled the topic? This thread has some info….

In my experience, the VW oil is very good, and VAG gearboxes are normally slick. The VW oil is a lot thinner than generic gearbox oil, so allows for slick cold gear changes.
I've seen many reports of people putting cheaper generic oil in, and wished they hadn't, and changed it back to VW.
Is your notchy gearbox as a result of something else, like a dragging clutch?

Yes have researched this and nothing ,there is no filler on my 6speed was thinking can it be filled via breather or reversing sensor

I would be going for a expensive alternative oil . The gearbox is smooth as silk when warmed up, also have notice when we had that hot weather and not used van all day at work would jump in it and gearbox was smooth ,very weird!

My 6 speed manual was not smooth changing when I first bought it

had My van brand new started doing it at 3000 miles been to dealers loads of times they just fob me off saying can’t find anything.mine is better when warm ,so I’m thinking oil related

It might not be oil related, it could be a mechanical tolerance that’s out, which goes away when the gearbox warms up & expands.

My 996 box is notchy and awkward when its cold and I have to be slow and considered changing gear. Once warm its rifle bolt slick!

Consequently SWMBO doesn’t like driving it. I’ve not told her about warming it up :)

Ok update ,managed to change gearbox oil with better oil today and no more notchy gear changes very happy

I filled through the breather ,just connected hose to it but had to be careful as air would blow oil back up pipe

I think it would be of benefit to others to share the process / oil make and grade etc.

I know the 5sp is filled for life, however with a drain plug and fill plug I will change it at some point to hopefully aid longevity.
