I have the flashing coil and the exhaust symbol up. I turn key and nothing except a click. I replaced the battery as a matter of course. Fuel level is back to normal. I've bought a vcds which hopefully will be here tomorrow. In the meantime, what are my likely culprits? Van was fine. Started normally, drove normally then just stopped and shut down. No warnings or indications prior to this.

Got a few pics of the dash.

Any issues before hand?

Was running ok b4?

When was it last run.?

So it's not turning over?

Im at work Dell, so no pics. But dash is normal except two amber warnings. The coil and the exhaust. There was no issue beforehand. Van is driven regularly and has given me no cause for concern prior to this unexpected surprise. I bought an fitted a new identical agm yesterday just to make sure as I needed a spare battery for my garage anyway and had been using an old motorcycle one. Garage batteries are handy. I work on motorcycles, so I just bought one just to eliminate battery from enquiries. Result is same with new battery, so it isnt the battery.

I get vague codes from Carista but no idea what they are. I've had two. 25603 and 16198. I can find nothing about either. The first one cleared with carista then the 2nd one popped up.

I put key in, turn and nothing. Maybe a click.

Im hoping the VCDS will be more enlightening. I should have that tomorrow from Gendan.

Cool.

Well if it's starter related you will get a fault code.

Keep us posted with your VCDS scan

Have you tried sticking it in gear and rocking from the front or rear? Old trick for a seized starter. You never know!

I'll try that Howzat. I used to have to do that on an old Fiesta I once owned.

Manual then?

What's the rest of the spec?

Similar issue on a previous thread with same fault code, no update as to how it was resolved though.

@Dwuk2000 did you resolve your starting issue?

What's your coolant levels look like? Mine did something similar recently, but it had started showing low coolant levels in the days leading up to it. My van is now sat on my drive waiting patiently for my local VAG specialist to find time to look at it. Am expecting it to be (based on numerous articles on here) EGR related.

@Dwuk2000 did you find out what was up with that code?
Dwuk2000 - "Turned out to be a dodgy engine earth (drivers side of the engine) disconnected it all, cleaned up the connections and has been fine since."

Thanks @Dwuk2000 I shall check that tomorrow (at work today)

If anyone has a pic of this earth so i can find it, thatd be very handy and much appreciated.

Problem sorted. 16198 is a short or an earth fault to starter. It was indeed that earth cable from engine mount to chassis on drivers side. What I discovered was that the engine mount bolt had oxidised a bit. Looked ok from above though. When I did it I noted that the engine mount bolt was looseish. Aha methinks. So I undid all, wire brushed everything and cleaned up all contacts. The thread where the bolt bolts to the lower of the engine mount had threaded. But enough sticks out the bottom for me to stick a 17mm nut and spring washer on. So I tightened the bleeder right up tighty. Re-installed cable, put that wd40 battery spray on everything. Van started, all faults dissappeared.
Its cost me 200 for the tow, 150 for the battery (didn't need a new one but it was 11v when I tested it, put it on my bikes optimate and its fine now) 270ish for vcds which I admit is a must for anyone with one of these. Plus 25 to get a new battery for my crap garage win laptop as im mac at home. Job jobbed in about 1.5hrs.
