Van Furniture Self Build Issue

Hi all,

I’m currently building my Van Furniture K2 SWB kitchen and have ran into some issues but with them being closed I thought I’d ask on here to see if anyone’s had a similar issue.

The small cupboard door above the fridge is fouling on the knock on trims making it virtually impossible to close and the latch is also hitting the retaining plate as though the door is sitting too high for some reason.

I have a feeling a mistake has been made somewhere but with the abysmal instructions I’ve been provided with it’s not really a surprise.

I wouldn’t assume you’ve done anything incorrectly. We found the kit needed significant modification, change and general fitting ability to make it work well.

That board with the slot in it for the trim, could it be flipped as I notice the slot is not central. So flipping would bring the trim away from the door. Otherwise I’d be sourcing different trim, or cutting it down.

As for latches interfering, again general rework required to make good.

If it makes you feel better, once fitted I’m really pleased with mine.

Looking at the lower picture the channel for the knock on edging doesn’t look central to the thickness of the wood causing the edging to be off centre. Might be able to trim it down with decent blade.

The trim appearing the wrong way round is due to the slot cut for the trim being off centre so it hangs over the edge no matter which way round it’s installed.

I have managed to sort the issue with the latch but the knock on trim is catching so I’ll speak to van furniture tomorrow and see if there’s a fix, I’m guessing they’ll tell me to cut the trim as a few people have suggested

That’s good to hear - It’s a bit disappointing to spend this sort of money on something that requires so much modification to assemble

Fyi...

Fan furniture offer a pre-build service.

We went for that option on our kitchen build. It cost £150 for them to pre-build it.

We then drove over to them to collect it in three or four pieces.

I want you to build it myself from a flat pack. Back due to a delay with the pop top roof where it had to go back to the installer we lost a week and had no choice but to have them pre-build it and then have it all fitted ribbed an old within three days to go to Europe.

A proper mad dash.

Trim is upside down? It is shorter on the left side than the right in the bottom picture.
I measured both sides on the screen and the left side is definitely shorter.

Looks great, not an option for me unfortunately as it is a 6hr+ drive. Has the trim been cut around the cupboard above your fridge?

I can’t think of any way to even up the edging as the channel hasn’t been cut correctly. Trimming the edge on the overhanging side will remove the lip of the edging which if it’s on the inside might still look ok. But the lip on the other side doesn’t sit flush either. Could the supplier replace the part for one with the knock on fitted correctly. You can get knock on edging that only has a lip on one side but still might not look right.

yeah that appears to be the issue, I’m expecting a call back from them at some point today so hopefully they can replace the part if that is the issue.

The rest of the parts also have an off centre slot for the trim so it seems as though this is intentional and I may have to resort to cutting the trim to fit

I don't think you will get a neat edge if you cut that existing trim down to fit. It may be just a case of getting a narrower knock on trim or a knock on with a single lip.
Most furniture board is 18mm but yours looks narrower. High Peak Conversions do a range of single lip15mm knock on edging.
