Underslung water tank

I have recently bought a T6 with a underslung water tank. Any advice on how often to clean it out etc ?? Do you empty after each camping trip ?

I don't have an underslung tank, but it is captive so I have the same issue re keeping it clean.

I empty the tank as soon as we get home from a trip.

The day before the next trip I'll add Puriclean and half a tank of water and go for a 5 minute drive to ensure the contents are sloshed around the whole of the tank. Then, after 30/60 mins, I'll empty the tank, re-fill it to max (water only), re-empty and finally re-fill as required for next trip (usually just 10 litres to save lugging around as full tank).

"It is advisable to not leave water sitting in your tank for more than three days"

That was news too me!!!

I've just fitted a 60L tank, so been asking the same question.

Some good info here.

Interesting article, but one thing it doesn't cover is water filters.

My boiling-water system has a water filter cartridge fitted, which filters various metals and chemicals, including chlorine.

Gemini says that water containing Puriclean should be run through the boiler, but that it should not be run through the filter - apparently it degrades the filter, so the filter needs to be removed first. Hopefully that advice isn't AI BS, as it's a real PITA to have to keep removing and re-installing the filter.

Erm, never? 🤔

Must admit, I have an unused tub of puriclean I've had for 6 years.

Had the underslung tank for 18mths and haven't cleaned it out yet, just empty after using and run a load of water through when filling. Tastes absolutely fine.
Time for a rinse out is say...... Lol...

I've just ordered these...

Inline Doesing bottle.

Purclean and Pro Clean stuff.

WHAT..... "It is advisable to not leave water sitting in your tank for more than three days"

Never heard that before. After 10 years of Motorhoming and 6 with our T6 I have never had a problem with fresh water tank underslung. I have 15lts left after last outing 3 weeks ago and used 35lts from tank that was in there for 3 months. Granted I test the water before each outing and full up with fresh before leaving most of the time. Once a year we do use Purclean and that’s it.

Just done a quick Google:

You should drain and refresh your motorhome's fresh water tank every 7 to 10 days. If the water sits much longer, public water supplies lose their chlorine, which can lead to bacterial growth, stale tastes, and biofilm developing inside your system. [1, 2, 3]

Best Practices for Water Management
  • Regularly Drain: If you aren't traveling weekly, make it a habit to drain the tank completely rather than letting water sit and go stale.
  • Using Additives: If you need to store water for longer periods (multiple weeks), consider using a safe water purification additive like Elsil or Puriclean, or a silver ion water preserver.
  • Traveling Weight: For better fuel economy and handling, try to travel with only 20 to 30 liters of fresh water, and fill the tank fully when you reach your destination.
  • System Maintenance: Perform a deep clean and sterilisation of your water tanks and pipes using an RV-specific steriliser or citric acid at least twice a year—typically at the start and end of the camping season. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]

I've already drained the tank after a recent Euro trip..... But there is still a small amount sloshing about.

I'll do the purclean thing and leave it in 24hrs,... Then drain. Rinse. Fill. Forthe next trip.?

Maybe leave 10L fresh in there for use after the next trip?

But drain and replace after a week-10days?

Sounds like a plan, but does Puriclean really need a full 24 hrs to do its thing?

Not sure, it says 1-24hrs.

The longer it's left the more effective it is.

.just the thought of Biofilm gross me out.

I think I probably need to use the Puriclean less often, but leave it in the tank for longer.

I have a 70l underslung water tank and only do a clean once a year.. never had a problem in 6 years, but I don't use it as drinking water or for washing unless boiled.

I take bottled water for cold water drinking / brushing teeth etc. A lot less hassle than cleaning and flushing the tank every 3 days as recommend.

I empty both my underslung fresh and waste tanks on every trip, clean them at the start and end of the camping season with puriclean and flush the whole system through thoroughly.
Tend to only have a few weeks between trips and then I just refill and use it.

O wow do you drink it too. Thought just for washing dishes hands etc

After reading all this I’m glad I’ve got 2 10L containers in my cupboard and I’ve scored out the under slung water container from my want list.
I will just do without the extra space I would get in my kitchen unit.

That's what I had.... Two 10lL tanks we n the kitchen unit.

Now swapped out for a 60L underslung to get some space back.

And grey drains under the van into a collapsible bucket.... Or the grass.

So far we only use for washing and teeth brushing... And drinking water is normally bottled or out the fresh tap onsite into a ridge monkey 5L container.

My van is 10 years old this year and we have always drank the water from the tank without any problems.
I empty the tank after each trip but there must be a small amount left.
I always have used a water additive that keeps drinking water potable for many months so that should prevent the small amount left in the tank after emptying from going bad.
I always refill with fresh water and additive before any journey so I don't let water sit unused in the tank for long periods.
