Bought my first Ugga Dugga Rattle gun, it's a 3 speed Ryobi thing for occasional use. Says it does up to 400Nm. Details on line were a little scant, the 'manual' even more so. I assumed there would be some way of limiting the torque applied.

If I was using it on wheel bolts for example, how do I not over torque them?

I did get my new wheels fitted by garage matey and he used his until the rattle started very briefly then finished off with a proper manual torque wrench.

You limit the torque by using the three speed settings, which limit the final torque too but even with a good battery my Ryobi impact wrench doesn't over tighten the wheel bolts, even on setting 3.
I generally find that after using it I then only need a fraction of a turn, less than a quarter, with the torque wrench to get them to 180NM.
Using the torque wrench for the final tighten is the only proper way to know you've done the job right.

Morning,
It depends on the make and model of said gun. Some are variable and others are "do it up Ba**ard tight ;)
Id recommend as you have said nip them up with the gun and then manual torque to recommended settings, I use 180Nm
Last thing you want is to be by the roadside hanging off a bar and it wont come undone.

Thanks chaps, I did wonder if the speed setting limited torque as well, I'll have a play when my impact sockets eventually turn up (they're with Evri ...).

I bouht a Makita. It does have a few different settings. I set it too the lowest then fastened a bolt. Then I started with a torque wrench (set at its lowest - I think 80Nm) and checked the torque of the bolt. I know now its a lot less than the 180Nm for the bolts so I know I can Ugga Dugga gun then torque up with the wrench.

The fastest way to damage threads, while they are common place in all workshops I doubt many of the mechanics using them will be doing the same on their own vehicles.
IMO and the way I was trained they have a purpose, to remove equipment that will be renewed and never used again.
