Trackers

Just looking at my wording policy for my insurance and noticed buried in fine print that they won't pay out for theft unless there's a tracker with active subscription.... So I guess I'm in the market for a tracker, any suggestions?

These are the options available at my local installer: Road Radio - Tracker Vehicle Recovery Systems

Having that buried in the small print is pretty terrifying! Was it not made clear when you took out the policy?

Not mentioned at any point whatsoever.

Thatcham S5/7 approved, or any tracker?
The booklet just says:

"2. Active tracker and subscription
If your vehicle is stolen, we will only pay your claim if it is fitted with a functional tracker with an active network subscription."

I'd go Thatcham approved as thats industry standard is S5/S7 higher class?

Worth a call/email to clarify the Insurers actual requirements I would suggest. I had this with mine last renewal. They tried to tell me to fit a Thatcham Alarm until I pointed out the original fitment on my Build Sheet!

P.S. it's hilarious when you disconnect the battery without switching the thing into service mode and the alarm goes off and the app pings you, then they phone you up to see if everything's ok ...

Alarm yes, tracker no.

Got a Metatrack on mine (insurance requirement) ... seems ok.

I noticed my policy wording this year mentioned a tracker. I honestly have no idea how a tracker prevents someone stealing the contents of my van!

Anyway, I contacted them to say I have a self installed tracker and was told that is fine.

Would be worth contacting them to see what they say. If they don't care what type of tracker, then get on ebay and buy any cheap tracker and pop in a giffgaff sim. Job done

I'm guessing VW connect stops working if the battery disconnects though?
Not sure. The mandatory telecom module has its own battery (that is causing a lot of troubles to some of us recently). How long it lasts and if it still let's you track after starter battery connection is unknown to me. Seems reasonable it does since it is mandatory for safety requirements to have a tracker installed. In case of serious accident, the starter battery get easily disconnected.

But your insurance may nor care, or may not have made it enough clear in the small text. Sure a good lawyer could argue that a tracking system installed by the manufacturer is compliant, on case of litigation.
At the end I think is a matter or dealing with the insurance.

Usually as you suscribe an insurance you need to suscribe another one for the legal help to litigate with them at the first occasion 🙄

Mine ran out (haven't paid) and it still seems to live track strangely.

These are good and cost around a fiver a month.

I’ve booked in to have a tracker retrieve fitted for £150 and they can do me a 5 year subscription for a touch over £300. It works out about £6 a month.

I’ll have a look at VW Connect in a bit more detail
