Today’s Scam du Jour

I try to use cash as often as possible but it's more and more difficult these days.
Yep i find this all the time, turn up to events and no cash is accepted, nightmare for my kids on school trips and in my opinion wrong. I also have a little chuckle to myself when paying for anything in cash when the 'cashier' looks absolutely shocked when you hand them a £20 note, the panic sets in as they try and count out £9.47 in change!

I recently had a 'discussion' with a friend of mine about how he always wants to pay cash. He is a self employed plumber and often takes cash for services. This is basically so he can avoid paying taxes. He therefore wants to pay cash for obvious reasons.

He is therefore stealing from the countries economy. Therefore people who are PAYE have to make up this shortfall in money by paying for people who avoid paying their fair share.

He didn't like it when I asked if his children went to a private or state school, if he ever used a doctor/dentist/drove on roads etc etc. and then asked him who he expected to pay for their education stc.

Sooner cash is a thing of the past and all earnings can be traced and people pay their fair share the better for me.
Surprised he’s still your mate to be fair.
It’s not easy being self employed no guarantee of work no incentives like holiday and sick pay can sometimes be a slog. It’s not a new thing builders excepting a little cash every now and again and I’m sure he pays more than his fair share in tax etc. To be honest more than half of the time it’s customers who like to pay in cash as they also don’t like paying plus vat. Most of us do are due diligence and pay are tax’s to help out the rest of Europe etc and they undercut us on jobs anyway.

Got to say while I dislike tax dodgers - why should I pay more tax because some others don’t?, banning cash would make no difference on this at all.
Dodgy folk will always find a way to be dodgy (maybe they’ll turn to bitcoin, foreign currency or just ask to be paid into their private accounts).
And the wealthy dodge taxes by having offshore accounts - with no cash changing hands, it’s all digital.

Politicians will use these arguments (and have whichever press they use to seed the argument) - as if one group has forced them to make changes, but it is weak and unfair and we should not fall for it.

Losing freedoms and some control over our lives due to crusty hippies, tax dodgers or folk that look different - no thanks. Let’s have politicians that can just do their job without using these tactics, it is possible.
