Morning All wish me Luck i have my Van booked in for Monday for new Timing and Alternator Belt, new Water Pump and pully's + oil change and MOT on a 4 year old van with 18,600 miles seems crazy will let you know how it goes and isa lot cheaper than VWs price

@Niknak hmmm i know that feeling is your motivation coming from China could be weeks before it arrives .... i could do this job myself too,

But Steve @ Van Tech sounds a very nice helpful guy. The whole thing is about piece of mind that it's done for another 4 years it needs an MOT and while its on the ramp for a safety check over and im supplying the oil. i change it annually. i don't need long life i use Castrol Edge with titanium to try and save my camshaft.

then i can then use what time i get to finish my work in progress weekender conversion

But im just so busy getting away in the van every weekend to get that done just yet lol

im even using a power pack instead of fitting my leisure battery for my lights i got all the parts here to fit thanks to Travel-volts he's got it but he don't sell motivation

regards Nick

Hi @Mud Digger.

Yes, I was looking for a good local indie, and saw them recommended by another member on here.

I will be using them in March next year for the same - ours will only have about 14k on it....

Let us know how it goes.

All the best.

Andy

Sounds a nice guy has the parts in stock so all good will let you know how it goes So thanks for the introduction and saved me a couple of hundred cheaper then V W

I collected the van this morning from VW Van Tech Uckfield East Sussex

MOT, + Minor Service, + Water Pump and belts (inc alternator belt ), + Oil Change , i supplied the Oil Castrol Edge with titanium = £ 617. 42 inc VAT + £ 60 for oil on Amazon

Very pleased with that price and now piece of mind for 4 more years and knowing break pads are fine @ 19000 miles

Steve's at Van Tech a lovely Guy @Noddy996 i told him we got recommended from this great Forum

Kindest regards as always Nick

Cool like you say another four years you get to do it all again lol, glad it done all ok always a relief

With independent garages and servicing, how does it actually work with the long life service schedule or whatever it's called. When you go to VW (and pay through the nose!), they know from the online system exactly what's been done and when so they know what needs doing. How does this work with independent garages, how do they know whether it should be a major/minor service and what exactly needs doing?

@t0mb0 its a VW garage of sorts. a lot of the Mechanics are Trained on VW . is why they start up a specialist garage. Van Tech is VW And using VW parts

Your Van is fitted with a service timer/reminder. With the Major repairs keep your receipts as no log books anymore. build a service history for when you come to sell it

The belt & water pump work is every 4 years from your Reg

MOT and Mileage history is recorded with DVLA .

Major replace Filters and Minor check Filters Services i had a interim Service & Safety check this visit with my annual oil change.

i can change air filter and pollen filter. They have a ramp for better checking underneath

Van Tech only had long life oil. i choose to have a annual oil change but im old skool. but they were happy to put in what i supplied

There's a few links in here showing you service types and checks @Pauly and @Dellmassive put up last week. i ll dig out for you

and lastly their garage is slightly smaller, less over heads and less wages, so the can be a little cheaper and having to rely on their reputation i think do a

nicer job.

Looks like this type of pump has reliability issues. If my MY16 Euro 5, 180ps has one fitted I’ll be looking to replace it with a non shrouded pump when it’s time.
I also found this regarding VW pump failures in the USA and lack of water pump maintenance schedule in VW documentation / manuals.

Great news @Mud Digger, and thanks for the feedback.

Know where I will be going next March.

Andy

@Noddy996 The price for the water pump / belt kits was good £350 plus £25 for the ribbed belt (alternator) i asked

for plus the dreaded VAT = £ 380.42 i did well there i think .. i ll use them for all my service work in the future

Regards Nick

I'm well aware that historically we have asked a water pump to be changed at the same time as a cam belt due to their susceptibility to break the impellor off the shaft.

Is this still the case or are we spending on new water pumps un-necessarily?

@Noddy996, did that price include new coolant? Like you I always stick to genuine parts as they have a two year warranty even if fitted away from a dealership.
