Think maybe I should have gone for 20” wheels

Changing the suspension will make far more difference than any any amount of messing about with blobby tyres.
Decent shock absorbers rather than the stock VW wooden ones and adjustable spring platforms so you can adjust ride height without altering the spring rate.
In practice this will mean a decent make coil over kit rather than the poke and hope of guessing spring lengths and suitable shock absorber type.
As for 20" wheels they can look sexy but those Mesh can look great with the arch gap gone and some spacers on the back wheels, these are my 6 year old 18" Momo Revenge.

p and spacers have you used👍

H&R monotube coil overs from Steve @CRS Performance, you'll need to call him for prices as I've had these on for a couple of years now but it wasn't eye wateringly expensive.
20mm spacers on the back with the extra length wheel bolts as a kit from eBay/Amazon, not H&R but from an online engineering shop in the Midlands and following recommendations on here.
Certainly don't buy any other wheel and tyre combo until you've sorted the suspension, if you do go with coil overs or another adjustable combination you can set the ride height of the vehicle without altering the damping rate so blobby tyres or rubber bands within reason.
I should say I've gone to 19" wheels currently with some staggered Judds after years of wheel stalking but the Momos and spacers aren't going anywhere as I like the bling.

Dude that is positively frosty 🥶

20's work great with matched quality shocks and springs or coilovers and the right tyres. I hear so many people saying their 20's are crap and the vast majority are running standard or cheap shocks with 275/40/20 106 tyres. Lots of people who have done it right are enjoying better than standard ride quality. I'm on Solow Low (at max height) with 255/40/20 101. I did a lot of research to get the lowest profile tyres in this size and found Bridgestone Potenza's to be the best. I had Yokohama Advans before these and they had a higher sidewall.

Nice van BenT5👍. I've a T30 lwb camper and after speaking with Steve at CRS, I fitted Koni active dampers and T32 springs to improve comfort whilst still providing reasonable clearance. This has worked really well. I've also now fitted 18” alloys with cross climate 3's (235/55/18). So, overall the van drives much better but I think the wheels look a bit lost. Should I try bigger wheels or try lower springs? 20251031_111021 (002).webp

It really depends on the look you've got going on in your head.
I bumbled along for the last six years on 18s before getting some 19s however the overall stance of the van, especially as a mumsy camper was down to suspension rather than big wheels and riding on stilts.

That's on coil overs and 18's with 255 45 18 tyres all round and now below on 19's with 255 45 19 front and 275 40 19 rear...

Looks like it can come down a little but I have an underslung water tank so I'll worry about that for the next six years.

With the Koni Active dampers and springs you're limited to about 60mm drop max. I'd look at a set of Eibach 60mm comfort low springs. These have adjustable rear collars which are a must for any camper on springs otherwise you'll get a nose up stance. I'm a big wheel fan so I'd always go bigger. Your T30 will look well with 255/40/20 101 if you went for 20's and would visually close the gap a little more too.

Apologies for the bluntness but that is Complete nonsense . Do not fit active dampers in lowered vans , KONI dampers need to be spec d the way they were designed , we have 3 different types to use and we fit thousands of them each year , the misconception about them from people who dont sell or understand them is misleading for customers.

The eibach comfort springs are terrible in a Camper the rear spring collapses almost completely and they dont adjust to the correct designed levels / Avoid these in anything but an empty van . This picture was taken in a camper just before we removed them for a more capable set up . Not fit for purpose and not on the Eibach web site as well ??

70 % of the 6000 vans we have done do not want too low and sit approx 40 to 50 mm , the reason is most owners of transporters want comfort, practicality and Great handling .

I remember chatting about this with you before I went for the Koni special actives.

I camp in mine so being able to go up farm tracks and across fields without hitting the underside is a must.
I also prioritise comfort and in my camper carries camping kit which rattles and adds weight, and like I said… fields. So for me stock height seemed like the best choice - comfort and ground clearance and no need to question if I have to tell the insurance I’ve been fiddling with my van.

Now I’ve ditched the commercial tyres (I still have a load rating higher then I need, just not crazy high) I can fully appreciate the joys of the Koni special actives and stock springs. It’s all held up well over the years too. Glad I took your advice years ago.

If people want suspension advice - go to an expert - like Steve at CRS, it’s worth it.
