The worst has happened with our conversion...

Terrible sitiation.
Companies House publishes financial results and company history of persons involved.
I would suggest spending 5 minutes reviewing the info’ before parting with a large sum.

What an awful situation.....

Thank you for the financial info about paying for these works with Credit card or debit card.... And NOT Bacs.

I've mainly paid suppliers via BACS on my camper in the past, so a lesson to be learned here.

"The bank is also not able to help unless it was paid via credit card or debit payment. Unfortunately for us and other customers we've spoken to we used bank transfer which doesn't have any protection.

A warning to others, avoid bank transfer and use a credit card or at least a debit card payment instead. At least the bank will help recover money"

Debit card doesn’t give you protection it must be a credit card. Debit card works the same as BACS.

So wiring and windows are 2 biggish jobs. Speak to West dubs directly and see if they have a local fitter who will fit the roof. There might be a cost saving as the hole is already cut. They will finish the carpet as part of the roof fitting.
Then you can start using it. As someone said grab a second hand rib or rock n roll bed and fit it and you're good to go. You can do all the other jobs yourself with the help of the forum. I'd never done a conversion and the only thing I didn't do myself was the poptop. The rest is easy.
Do it in stages as you get a bit of cash. look for secondhand units. @Badjamin previously got a good deal and ended uo with a cracking DIY conversion. It can be done. Have faith and don't be too disheartened. You've still got the van, once the roof is on it's all plain sailing.
There might even be a forum member local to you who will give you a hand if you are stuck.

Noted - so ONLY credit card for financial protection?
Yup. You don’t have to pay the whole amount on CC. Just more than £100, I say £200 to be safe. E.g. the item/deposit is £5000, pay £200 on CC and £4800 bacs/debit card/cash, get a receipt or invoice for the whole £5k and you are protected for the whole £5k just by paying a couple of hundred on CC. The limits are minimum £100 maximum £30000.
@Dellmassive shall we split this off into a separate thread that can be pinned for future reference?

When we bought Mrs D's new car we wanted to pay £501 deposit on my credit card (I think the threshold is 500 for vehicles, but may be wrong). The dealer got a bit arsey, I think it costs them more, but if they wanted to shift the 50 grand motor they had to choice. The acquiesced while cursing me under their breath.

As a real world example and empirical proof that the system works. I bought a laptop direct from Dell it was over £2k. It crashed after a couple of months and they sent an engineer out to fix it. I’m pretty savvy with IT stuff and had an idea what it was, but being under warranty I left it alone. The “engineer” arrived and he was a cocky little sod, his opening line was “it’s only a 10minute job”. 2 hours later he declares the machine needs to go back to Dell for a factory reset. I refused to let him take it and insisted on a new replacement. Anyway long story short, I got the whole amount back from Tesco bank, Dell never collected the dead machine and I fixed it.

Tesco bank are Barclaycard with prison food branding, and both are pretty good in that regard. I've have a few refunds, including including a damaged wardrobe that cost four figures and which Oak Furniture Warehouse also never collected. I rubbed it down, painted it, rubbed it down again for the distressed look and kept it for years.

Same here, I've jsut bought a used car and it was difficult for Merc to get their head round paying £2k of it on my cc and the rest in real money. But it's always worth doing, even if it's a bit of hassle.

I read this with incredulity , not just because of the unscrupulous bastid who kept taking monies with full knowledge of his company,s impending failure but the passing , hand over fist of HUGE and totally fairytale requests for deposits and part payments for work that hasn't even happened.
With one of my rental properties, Brian ( NOT Bob ) my builder , got the double glazing and doors fitted to the refurbished house , a full new kitchen and bathroom was installed AND he'd started on the new internal doors and carpentry before he mentioned any monies at all .
Even then , after all that work he said send 6000 over via BACS , obviously i used bacs as I good actually see about 15000 grand of work had been done.
True gent running an honest and trustworthy business.

Unlike that complete C@NT you had the misfortune to cross paths with.

However, my sympathy is still somewhat diminished, for absolutely crass decisions to hand over money , HUGE amount of monies , gullable doesn't come into it .

Apologies for the bluntness, but I always just say it how I find it..

Good luck with the rest of it , and However you choose to progress it .👍👍👍

I pulled out of my £13k Home solar installation as the company refused to allow me to pay the 20% deposit by Credit Card.
"We don't accept Credit Cards unfortunately "
That was a red flag for me so cancelled straight away

We paid the balance with real money, or electrons.

Tried to do a bank transfer, but Halifax were being arseholes, asking me all sorts of stuped questions because im elderly (apparently 62 is elderly now), was I under duress (no), had we seen the vehicle (yes), was it a reputable company (been trading since the 1950s in one form or another), and still they wouldn't authorise it despite all the due diligence being covered, and me being a far better qualified fraud investigator then they were, and the credit car deposit meaning they wouldn't take the hit anyway if it went wrong.

So I hopped in the van, went down there and paid the balance on my debit card, same bank, without any issues.

I then changed bank, as I like to be able to spend my money when I want and not when they tell me I can. The whole process was designed to protect their interests, not mine.
