The old fan heater resistor issue, but….,,

Hi All. (T28 2016) First post but I have read all the threads, looked at all the YouTube videos, thought “that’s doable”, got new resistor, removed footwell cover and glove box, but then faced with this. (Not where all the videos said it would be!) Resistor right up tight against dashboard framework. Where to begin to get to that? Any advice gratefully received. Many thanks.

I think your looking at wrong, the resistor comes out the back of the box not the front, it will be touching the vertical bit of flooring at the rear not the plastic of the dash itself

Thanks Pauly. I certainly expected the resistor to be at the back! No sign. The green unit in the photo looks like it and has the 4 wire connector and 5.5mm screws. Just no way of getting it out to look without major removal of dash or heater unit, to my mind. ??

Its underneath, you have lay on your back and look up.

Like most things Transporter there wasn’t a great deal of thought for maintenance but it’s not so bad a job.

A picture of heater controller panel would be helpful - as there were three different heater/AC systems installed - manual/Climatic/Climatronic.
Well, per workshop manual "Heating, air conditioning system" for the manual system:

5.10 Removing and installing fresh air blow‐​

er series resistor with overheating fuse - N24-​

Removal and installation are described for a left-hand drive​

vehicle as an example. For right-hand drive vehicles, the layout​

is a mirror image.​

Removing​

– Remove footwell cover on front passenger side ⇒ General​

body repairs, interior; Rep. gr. 68 ; Compartments/covers;​

Removing and installing footwell cover .​

– Remove glove compartment ⇒ General body repairs, inte‐​

rior; Rep. gr. 68 ; Compartments/covers; Removing and in‐​

stalling glove compartment .​

– Detach dash panel at right and in centre to facilitate access​

to fresh air blower series resistor with overheating fuse -​

N24- ⇒ General body repairs, interior; Rep. gr. 70 ; Dash​

panel; Removing and installing dash panel .​

– Unscrew bolts -arrows-​

– Separate electrical connector -1-.​

– Unscrew bolts -2-.​

– Pull out fresh air blower series resistor with overheating fuse - N24- -3-​

Hi, I'm on my second resistor pack which is irritating. I recall a post somewhere in similar threads re a voltage regulator modification someone carried out. Wondering if it works and if so what's involved ?

The simplest solution is not to use speed setting ONE.

I've had two... Each lasted 3years each. (6yr old van)

Keep my blower on #1 99% of the time.

Is interesting, some have no issues on setting 1, others say don't use on setting 1.
The mod suggestion I'm looking for refers to a PWM motor regulator upgrade. Any ideas where this is ?

My T5.1 lives on setting one and is still on the original resistor. The bearing in the fan is pants though so I need to change the fan unit at some point. Seems an easy job looking at it.

Thread 'PWM motor controller replacement for resistor pack'

I've been testing a PWM motor controller to replace my resistor pack and I'm pretty bloody happy with it. So much more efficient! Now I just have to figure out where to stick it. I gets quite hot running flat stick (not on low like the resistor solution), so I was thinking of trying to fit it in the area the resistor pack currently sits to cool with the blower air. Before I go ripping out my blower, does anybody know how much space I have to play with in there? Dimensions of the controller are roughly 25mm h x 45mm w x 80mm l.

Be cautious, the resistor pack fuse is a safety feature to prevent overheating and a fire.... Removing it will have knock on effects.

Not thought of that and wouldn't want to cause more problems. Will stick with changing resistor pack .....
