Temporary Insurance

Hi,

My friend is going to be borrowing my van for a weekend (4 days), this will be the only time he will be driving the van and then it will be back to me as the main driver.

I've said to him I'd like him to get his own fully comp insurance for the 4 days. Keeping my policy untouched and modified as it will be coming back to me after the 4 days.

Who is best to get temporary fully comp cover through?

It is just for use in the UK.

TIA

He must be a good friend, because I'd baulk at allowing a close family member to 'borrow' my van, let alone a friend.

If your friend has their own fully comp insurance, then them adding your van to their policy as a Temp Addtl Vehicle may be an option.

Whichever route you go and whichever insurer your friend uses, speak to your own insurer before committing. You need to be confident that there's no issue re dual-insurance (e.g. which insurer will be liable in the event that your van is damaged, whilst unattended, during the period he's borrowing it?) and that the cover your policy provides - things like guarantees for previous repairs and any new-for-old cover - won't be compromised by a repair authorised by another insurer.

If you're not careful, such arrangements can be friendship-ending.

I'm worried sick about my wife taking my van in August with older daughter and grand child to Bestival in Dorset, sleepless nights! Something will go wrong I'm sure!

@Drive Wayne

Tell her you forgot you had it booked on the same dates @ Darkside for a big service & a new, improved bed board, & that you'd paid a 50% deposit 6 months ago & sadly you've just found out from @Bigsidavies it's sadly non refundable!!!

There is always a way round...
I used a similar argument last year and she did proper camping (in a tent) in Dorset, forum Summer camp (prepaid, 100% deposit) was on the same days, I had the van!
Funny you should mention @Bigsidavies , it was he that introduced me to a term totally relating to my wife and daughters, that of 'Mechanically unsympathetic'. So true!

Plenty of companies doing short term insurance, we've used it before Covid for relative's vans.

Probably through the usual comparison sites? I always start with Moneysavingexpert.
