T6 Startline Air Con Retrofit

Hi all,

I’m new to the forum and looking for some guidance on fitting an oem aircon kit from a breakers.

I have seen most of the posts here about fitting aircon but my query is that I have been sent a full wiring loom with the kit which I was hoping not to have to fit.

Is there such a thing as a wiring loom specifically just for the aircon components?

Here are some photos of what I’ve purchased.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My van is a 2019 T6 Startline Kombi.

The kit was taken from a T6 at a breakers, advert stated “

VW T6 Transporter 2016-2020 2.0 TDI Euro 6, Complete Genuine A/C Conversion Kit “.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome along...I'm in a similar situation, albeit i bought everything i think ill need a while ago and never got around to it. perhaps seeing someone else pull their finger out might motivate me into getting my arse in gear before those 1 or 2 sunny days of our british summer :D

@Adam_T6 s thread probably has the most info, so well worth a read. - my-air-con-retrofit-thread

Thanks Sparkzer, the forum is full of helpful information. I have read Adam’s thread a lot in the past few weeks and slowly getting my head around it.

One thing I’m unsure of is if I can strip back the full loom I have and use it in my van or if I need to reuse existing pins and add in some new ones.

I am going to get an Autospark to do the wiring work but I want to be sure in my head of the process. I have downloaded the wiring diagrams from Adam’s thread and others so hopefully we get there in the end.

I’ve nearly got the dash out and I’ve removed the front bumper so will be in a position to start fitting the parts soon 🙌

For whatever reason, each vehicle had a specific loom dependant on the spec it left the factory with.

You can become a VIP member on here and get full access to manuals and wiring diagrams.

Thanks @dubber36, I had already become a VIP and downloaded wiring diagrams but still trying to get my head around it.

From what I can make out for the new T17A plug I need to do the following:

1. Take Black/blue from old fan-switch
2. Take Brown from old fan motor
3. Not required
4. Not required
5. +12v Fuse 15 on holder C (red/grey) - Is this a new wire to a vacant area of fuse board under middle of dash?
6. Ground (blue/red) New wire ground to chassis?
7. A/C Compressor - New wire straight to compressor pin 1?
8. Pressure sensor (pin 2) (brown/black) - New wire straight to pin 2 of the Pressure sensor?
9. Residual heat relay (yellow/ green) - THIS IS WHERE I AM STUMPED AS I DO NOT HAVE A RESIDUAL HEAT REALY UNDER DASH TO RIGHT SIDE OF STEERING WHEEL
10 - N/A Heated seat (pink/ yellow) - not required
11 - N/A Heated seat (orange/black) - not required
12 - CAN+ (connect to radio twisted pair) - new wire connect to radio twisted pair
13 - CAN- (connect to radio twisted pair) - new wire connect to radio twisted pair
14 - N/A rear heated screen(green/brown) - Not required?
15 - N/A coolant shut off valve - Not required?
16 - Centre vent temp G191 (brown) - I AM UNSURE OF THIS ALSO? DO I NEED TO PURCHASE A PART AND WIRE IN?
17 - Centre vent temp G191(brown) ground As Above

Another question I have is what to do with the old heater plugs? Do these just get taped up and left?

I am also trying to get the old heater box out at the moment, does the metal supporting bar across the full width of the van need to be removed? I can't seem to get it loose although I'm starting to think a bolt needs removed from in behind scuttle panel or in engine bay?

@Adam_T6 @need4speed @mmi can you please assist?

Thanks in advance.

I think the relay is there to supply power to heated seats etc when stop/start is active, I could be wrong as it’s been 4 years since I last looked. Good luck. 🤣

I recall that residual heat relay had me stumpped when i read @Adam_T6original thread as i dont have one (no factory webasto or heated seats) and in part was one of the reasons this project got put down the list 'for another day'. I note from the same thread @need4speed had some issues on that point also but im not exactly sure how they overcome it. @need4speed will likely recall what was needed, but hasnt been on the form since last october.

I believe that heat sensor G191 will be needed, again its a part i didnt get the PN for, but have been scavenging sensors from VAG scrap cars when I've been able in the hope one of them turns out to be the right one :)

Thanks for both of your responses, it's much appreciated.

As I got a complete wiring loom from the T6 the kit was removed from, I looked at all the wiring diagrams and created a table of what wires go where and compared this to the wire colours on the T17A plug.

It transpires the Residual Heat Relay wire was not part of the T17A plug so I can only assume it isn't actually required if the van didn't come with a J708 relay. The wiring diagram shows a wire going to a dead end with no section through the J708 relay which leads me to think it isn't required too.

Regarding the G191 sensor I will try and source one of these and wire this in.

I'll update you with progress once I've moved on a bit more.

Thanks again.

Traced the wires back tonight on the loom I received and found the temp sensor - PN 1K0 907 543 E

Nice..just googled it and it appears to be pretty common on VAG group cars..hopefully its one i have stashed, if not with your info, at least i know now what i need.

Looks like you have everything you need?

Update - Aircon retrofit complete, gassed and coded. All working perfectly.

Thanks @Adam_T6 @sparkzer @dubber36 for the comments and help. Adam your write up was great, couldn’t have done it without 👍.

One thing that threw me off was the residual heat relay, this cable is not required in the T17a plug if you do not have this relay installed on your van. This was confirmed with the wiring loom I received with the used aircon kit.

If anyone has any questions I’d be happy to assist where possible.

Well done!, id better get my arse in gear and do mine whilst its fresh in your mind in case i have any questions!

How did you manage to get the cooling fan to run when you switch on the ac mine all works but cannot get that right i

Hi

Greetings.

I’m in the same position regarding retro-fitting air con to a T6 SWB Startline 2018.

Somewhat foolishly (hangs head in shame) I bought the van yesterday and was driving along and, finding it stuffy and warm, went to switch on the A/C ….nothing!

Dilemma. Take is back to the dealer, re-sell, live with it or try to find out if retro-fitting is an option.

I’ve none of skills you guys have. So doing it in my spare time is not an option as I don’t have a PhD in quantum mechanics.

I’ve seen an after market OEM air con system for £750 + VAT — fair price? Seems a bit much.

Assuming I source the required system and can find someone to do the work — do you think it’s worth the hassle and cost? Or should I, as some wag elsewhere on the forum suggested, drive around in swimming trunks with a surfboard!?🤣🤣

What might the labour costs be for what I understand is a rather complex job? 10 hrs @ £60 per hour? More ?

Any advice gratefully received.

I bought 99% of the bits needed aleady, not go around to installing yet and so far its cost me somewhere between £300-350, as a guide for you, im not sure how that compares to others spends but just thought id give you an idea.

Not to bad to fit completely remove the dash bit of a pain fitting the new belt the diagram on here was totally wrong besides that easy enough

Hey, I'm in a similar situation. Did you ever find a solution?
