T6.1 RHD Manual, Heating stuck on cold

Hi Brain trust!
I have a T61. RHD Manual and my heating is stuck on cold. I understand that is probably either the linkage broken or the servo knackered. I have a replacement linkage, But the question is , how the hell do I get to it? I have hands like dinnerplates with fingers like cumberland sausages! I cannot for the life of me work out a location or access to get to either of them. If anyone could give me a guide on what things need to come off and how they come off I would be eternally grateful.

Thanks in advance

Ok, I made a tool to enable me to move the heater linkage back and forwards and proved to my satisfaction that the little triangular linkage has sheared in the servo housing. Now I just need to get the trim off so I can access it. Any ideas?

I am no mechanic but here is a video i made of how i fixed mine, the tools i used and adapted to fix it. The single hardest thing is the space and the tools to fit the space and the stupid tapered screws they use plus some hacks for getting the clutch out the way and holding stuff in place while you get it fitted back in, hope its of use to someone at some point .

Great vid, that will help many ppl I am sure. It dawned on me that I had the fault as the weather changed in Sept and just caught the last week.of the used warranty, though I expect sooner or later it will be broken again with the VW part.

Thanks man appreciate that 🙏🏻

i'd like to add my thanks to sebastian747 for the video. I'd been dreading doing this job, having gone through the autumn and winter with a wooden spoon in the door pocket. Every thread you read on this subject makes mention of how awkward and fiddly this job is. It's a sure-fire five spanner Haynes difficulty level and no mistake!

Don't try to save time by not removing both sides of the lower dashboard, it's well worth the effort to goin every millimetre of access. There a great point to note in the video, tie that clutch pedal out of the way that will give you a lot more room.

I can only really add two bits of advice to what has already been mentioned in all of the threads. One: I found that entering the cab from the passenger side and laying across the floor gave me a slightly different angle of attack during various stages. You will have to experiment with accessing from both sides to see what works best for you and when. Two: i found that a 5BA spanner was a lovely interference fit on the head of the screw - particularly useful when removing the most difficult screw up by the chassis tube. I understand that many people may not have this in their toolbox, I got lucky.

I purchased the re-engineered quadrant piece from romeorowe on here, the eBay link is in a few different threads. I have to say, it's worth spending the money on this, great bit of kit. You only want to be doing this job once, so don't replace the broken part with a like-for-like part.

One last point to note - do not forget to plug the actuator motor fly lead back in if you removed it, you will curse as you re-remove the driver's side lower dash to access it!
