T6.1 rear tailgate notches in panel

Just picked up new T6.1 which was an upgrade from my T6 and i dont ever remember seeing these notches or cut outs whatever you would call them in my last van. Any ideas what they are? looks like it could be for a metal panel to slot in like a van guard or something.

They will have been there on your old van, for fitting the Caravelle/shuttle inner trim.

Only visible if you have a Kombi. They are not present in a panel van unless you have a rear screen.
