T6.1 interior lights

Hi all,

I have a 24 plate kombi,

I cut off the rear lights and installed Some led spot lights.
They have been working for 14 months and then the van went into vw and came out with the lights not working.
It’s been back and apparently there is a short on the pos leg of the lights to ground coming from the j159.

It’s now back to factory with the cables in a connector block as they said it was my wiring or lights.
I am a sparky so know how to wire etc etc
They said the lights may have damaged a module etc
All been fine since vw had the van.

They said the lights are on the can bus and may have caused issues, but this pos to ground short has not blown a fuse at all.

I would have thought the can bus would have bout a fault code up straight away if it didn’t like the lights but have been working for 14 months with no problem.

Any thoughts on this, would led spots be ok on the original wires for the interior lights ?

Any help would be appreciated, also would anyone have the part code for the original plugs for the 2 pin plug for the interior lights ?

Van is now stripped out but I am sure it’s not wiring.

Courtesy light circuit is not monitored and is nothing to do with canbus. They are lying

Thank you @Deaky for the reply, would you happen to know where the 2 rear lights wire back to at all ? And I am assuming red/black is pos as this is what I have a short on to the chassis of the van

the rear light wiring passes through a coupling point at the base of the left a pillar (biegeish plug/socket beside the glovebox) just look for wire colours the same as at the light fittings, then back into the dash, you could start by disconnecting there and testing maybe ?

there is a relay that controls/timeouts the positive supply to the interior lighting circuit, i guess its possible that could be faulty or damaged and cause the missing supply ?
not sure where it located on a 6.1 but prob on or near the BCM bracket

also keep in mind that short to ground is a generic term that diag machines spit out so it doesnt actually mean there is a short it could just mean a lack of supply etc, the lights and circuit is not BCM monitored as its just relay controlled so no way for the brain of the van to know this info even of it was true !

what work was done on the van ?

It went in for gear/gear box noise and found no problem, but They found a bent ac pipe bracket somewhere and replaced it whilst it was in.

Also if I put my multimeter on continuity, I get continuity between black/red and the chassis of the van

LED rear interior lights - How i done it.

so a few have asked, so i though i would just list it here as a post so i could refer back to it in the future.

The lights were purchased from The T6F shop over here >



We were planning to do the carpeting at around the same time, but for the purpose of this thread ill leave the carpeting bit out.

first thing to do was to remove the existing roof lining by popping out the grey plastic hex head pop studs, they all unscrewed easily, the center support bar popped out with a plastic trim tool... no problems so far....

So this was covered under warranty, apparently it was a short on a wire in the drivers side A pillar.
They couldn’t find it so they replaced the wiring loom between the interior light and the J159 so they said.
