T6.1 Clutch or transmission wobble

Hi All,

I posted a short while ago about success having my VW dealer swap the clutch/flywheel at their cost to resolve some juddering I was experiencing in 1st/reserve. This appeared to have smoothed out the 1st/reverse gear and lowered the bite point. I still notice first thing in the morning a slight hint of the issue but only on first engagement of the clutch. My van has done approximately 14500 miles.
I've been driving the van for a few weeks now covering 500 or so miles at most and something doesn't' feel quite right on my van and I'm a bit stuck as where to go next.

Let me describe this the best I can to see if anyone understands what I'm experiencing:
  • There has always been a feeling of looseness in the transmission of my van, like an unavoidable wobble when engaging the clutch that you can feel though the pedal/van. More noticeable if you retract the clutch too quick - almost like something is instable and settles quickly.
  • When I start the van it feels more animated that other T6.1's I drove, more of a sudden shake to life when you start it up.
  • I also find it difficult to get smooth gear changes, maybe described as feeling harsh and with that engaging the lower gears I can feel that wobble when engaging them at times.
I've driven two courtesy T6.1's both with lower mileage on and 5 speed boxes (mine is 6 speed) and although different engines to mine felt spot on.

I'm pretty certain something isn't right and I do wonder if this has been the crux of the issue that caused the clutch/DMF issue in the first instance.

Not sure how old the van is but you have some time before the warranty is up, especially if you take out the two additional years.
Log the issue with VW by email so there is a record and carry on driving is my advice.

do you get rid of it?! which you got now?
Yeah rejected it in the end as spent 9months of agro trying to get them to sort it.
For me these vans are over priced for what you get and extremely poor after service care.
The anxiety of risking getting another ans going through the same trauma wasn’t worth it.
I’ve gone back to a car (estate) now and love it.

I have the same issue on my t6.1 2020 with 15k on the clock.
When I pull off in first gear the whole van violently judders -
Happens most days, but worse when driving in traffic and engaging the clutch more.
I did report it last time when my van went in for its service. They obviously said nothing found.
I have until November until my warranty runs out.
It’s very frustrating , is this a common issue?

Yes it’s a common fault with all my research into it, forums and Facebook groups are littered with people who have this issue.

Sounds like yours is worse than mine was and possibly is the DMF. Mine ended up being a new gearbox.
Best to get to sorted before it gets worse and dare I say it causes damage to other components.

Also, a specialist I took my van to once told me the judder is worse when warm as the greases in the DMF goes thin and allows more vibes if it’s worn.

Mine turned out to be the slave cylinder was leaking brake fluid on the clutch and was slipping, juddering etc.. basically made changing gears and pulling off feel like I was driving a POS. New clutch kit fitted and changed the gearbox oil while the job was being done.. soooo much better now

Looks like VW go for the lowest quote when buying in oil seals!
