Hi everyone, I’ve just purchased a camper conversion and I’m struggling to get a reasonable insurance quote. I’ve had to call up every insurance firm as the online forms don’t work for the fact my van is technically classified as a car, but has camper modifications.
Im based in South-West London, have had my license for 12 years and have 4 years NCD. I would be doing 8,000 annual mileage Social domestic and pleasure.
The van is a 17-plate registered as a diesel car on the V5 and a Volkswagen transporter T30 SE TDI BMT S-A. The previous seller told me it was originally a mobility vehicle that they converted into a van. It has a professional pop top conversion but the inside cabinets/tap/hobs/rock n roll bed were fitted by the previous seller (bed has been crash test certified).
I’ve read around the forum and tried recommended insurance places:
Adrian flux quoted £1400
Just Kampers quoted £1400
Comfort campers said that they don’t insure in London
Howdens quoted over £4000
Brentacre offered £800 with markerstudy but this forum seems to have mixed reviews with them and the policy wording seemed vague and like they were likely to dispute claims.
Admiral quoted £880 but when told it was classified as a car on the V5 they said that the camper conversion part couldn’t be covered.
LV, Greenlight and RAC all won’t insure.
Reading online it looks like it’s difficult to change the V5 classification with the DVLA these days (there’s a blog that says 5% of requests are approved)?
Has anyone had the same vehicle/been in the same position and managed to get a reasonable quote? Or does anyone have any other good insurances recommendations?
Thanks all, appreciate it
