Starlink

Has anyone done a permanent install of the starlink in motion RV solution?

If so, can it run of DC power or did you have to run through an inverter?
And
Did it work mounted on a pop top, with the pop top both up and down?

£95 / month isn’t cheap, I think I’d rather have a portable solution if I were travelling in a remote location, something like an Iridium phone.
I’m pretty sure I was reading that Apple were introducing sat network capability in the very near future.

I was more thinking for connection for entertainment, weather etc rather than Just for safety.

Iridium is something I’m very familiar with. Its speed is terrible for data. For real connectivity with the tradition suppliers you have to go with Inmarsat with a 600mm active dome. Ok on a big sail boat. Not so great on a T6. And for any significant data volume and you’ll be well over 95 a month.

Starlink will give around 200mbps. More than enough to stream video.

Rather than start a new thread, I’d like to resurrect this one. I am in the middle of installing a Starlink Mini with my youngest (he’s ten!)

I have a 2018 T6 California. I also have two young lads (10 and 12) who use the internet more and more! Whilst I am content for them to hammer my data on mobile, that really doesn’t help when I need to “work” (aka, join a mindnumbing Teams call!)

Now that lovely Elon has decided that address changes is the same is roaming, I thought I’d try the “in motion” capability.

I’m looping in @soldas who has played in the Starlink arena before and @Dellmassive who is the resident guru on van electrics!

I bought the Starlink mini 3 weeks ago. Roaming package £50 a month. Primarily for my new van which I get in January. I also bought a 3dprinted bracket with suckers to stick it in my new vans skylights. Travelled to Austria with it stuck on the side window. It would not stay on the rear window via the heating element wouldn’t it allow it to form a seal. .

I had decent signal 60% ish of the time according to the app. Had it plugged into my van inverter. Tried using it in the 12v sockets with an uprated plug USB C and my separate USB C and it would not play very well. Then connected it to my EcoFlow USB C and it was fine.

Great speeds in some iffy mountain passes. Up to 79mbps.

£50 a month for 50gb roaming. But it’s a lot cheaper in Europe.

But Kate but see my reply above. It would not work in the van mounted in the pop top. DC power is what powers it and it uses 25-40w but mine would not work on either my USB C or 12v sockets.

Brilliant @Mick - thank for sharing your experiences. I too have misgivings about the USB solution even with the updated throughput. I’ve asked @Dellmassive to share some thoughts on what inverter I should consider. Have you got a pic of the ExoFlow you are using. The young lad and I are off to google it.

By the way, I also bought the 3d printed mount and I have some helicopter twin-stick tape arriving soon as I’m going to try mounting on the roof

This is my worry too…. 12v sockets not up to it

EcoFlow mate. Www.EcoFlow.com a few of us have the Delta 2. Great bir of kit. I use a Victron 12v 200va inverter for mine and my bike.

Can you send details of your mount? Mine is internal.

Magnetic mounts (the black disks) but they won’t work on the aluminium roof of my Cali. I was thinking of gluing some large metal washers to the roof for the magnets to “grab” but I’ll probably unscrew them and use twin-stick 3M tape directly between the mount and the roof

Really interesting seeing people's setup.

I use my van from time to time as a mobile office (All I need is a macbook and an Internet connection to work). I have got a Kuma 4g router and puck antenna mounted on the poptop and found that great for YouTube (keep the kids amused while driving) and security camera. But just not quite enought for work video calls.

The starlink has been flawless for that.

I use it connected to a Jackery and magnetic mount it on the bonnet but I've also had it on the dash without issue. Although I do find having it as close to north helps for full 200+ connection.

I am looking at sticking it to a roof light in my new van a Weinsberg X Cursion MQ 500 on a T6.1. chassis.

But your right about aligning it to the North travelling south to Austria I was getting great signal on my tailgate windows but it wouldn’t stay there.

I can see how you made up your magnetic mounting now. Nice neat solution for when parked up.
