STARLINK (Satellite Internet and WIFI) -- How I Done It --

Here is a little update on our star link setup. 100GB roaming, and in France.IMG_6972.webp

1) We are relatively surrounded by trees, but with Amazon tripod gizmoid as above, Starlink works fine. It does report some obstructions but says that they are unlikely to impact on performance.
2) Very impressed by speed. WiFi range is impressive as well, and 5 bar signal even inside van with doors closed at a distance of some 6m from the dishy.
3) Easy to set up and links quickly to satellite.
4) Not sure how robust the set up will be in the wind - there is one peg that holds it down and I may well attempt to "mistral proof" it further.
5) Having like most people unmetered wifi at home, it's been a bit of a surprise just how much data you can burn through - general browsing and YouTube/bbc iplayer.
6) NordVPN works fine although I have to pause it to allow my iPhone to use the app to connect with the dishy. Not a biggy given that once you have set it up and it is working you don't need to do much more.
7) Potential elephant in the room is the 2 month roaming rule - we are here for more than that, although I don't see why I can't just register to the address of the campsite here. Equally some reports say that it may not be an issue. We shall see.
8) Just using the supplied mains adapter and lead (goodness it is long!). Uses about 15W, but you can set it up to go to sleep during the night should power consumption be an issue.
9) Reason we have is that although there is camp WiFI, the surrounding data infrastructure is not great, and there is a very frustrating slow down/stop in data at peak time - so from 5 -9 at night and likewise in the morning as well.

TBH, I suspect Musk has the resources (and lack of morality) to steal just about anything from anybody should his beady eye fall on them.

Yeah I got the same. As has been mentioned elsewhere until there is real competition we are at the mercy of Elons greed.

For me, frustratingly nothing comes close in terms of service so I'm stuck for my use case

I was under the wrong impression that I could use standby mode when travelling in Europe, but no, I've now got to go through upgrading the service to the £50 100Mb service, and do the passport/selfie stuff too, IF I need his services in Europe.
At least I'll only pay part of the upgrade fee, my billing cycle is until the 8th June.
But double? For the same speed standby? W4nkr!

How do you do the passport selfie stuff can you do it before you leave or does it detect it’s in Europe and prompt you to do it ?

Ideally could do it before my trip

It'll give me something to do tonight whilst parked up in Folkestone! I want to leave it until the last minute for a day or two less of the £50 a month charges.

I looked at Starlink a while ago and came to the conclusion that I would stick with using my phones roaming data allowance of 25GB whenever we're on our month long road trips in europe. I don't tend to do video streaming which I guess accounts for a a lot of peoples usage but I do rely on Android Auto for all navigation, browse, download a newspaper every day along with the occasional magazine and stream radio quite a lot but have never really got anywhere near the limit. I guess it also helps that I don't use it much in normal circumstances and also that by happy coincidence, we usually find that the monthly allowances refresh mid-trip. We do occasionally tap into campsite wifi when it's available (via VPN) but I doubt we'd miss it if we didn't. I can only remember the very odd occasion when we have been unable to get a decent speed and if we ever do need a data top up, I know it's very easy to get acheapish esim nowadays. A couple of years ago, we drove through Montenegro and Albania which being non-EU were not covered by our roaming allowance and I bought a 10¢ physical SIM card at the first shop we saw in Montenegro which gave 100Gb of 5G for use in either country. My wife uses her own phone with same allowances as mine if we ever need but haven't so far. Apart from all that I don't particularly like Musk and I'm a tight aris into the bargain.

Re France and Europe.(Non SL option)

I've grabbed a Lebara 30day SIM.

£15 for 50gb... And you can use 30Gb of that in Europe..

I was just going to swap the SIM in the vans WiFi when hitting France.

But now I've got a twin SIM WiFi travel router so have both Sims running now.

I stand corrected (thanks Lee). I'm with Lebara and I knew all along that my data limit was really 35Gb / 30Gb roaming so I'm not sure why I said 25 for the latter.
@Dellmassive - Out of interest what 5G router is that? Back in the day I used a little Huawei 4G jobbie but later contracts and 5G really made that redundant.

I was going to be pulling the trigger on this for this summer but don’t like the way starlink is heading.
Think I’m going to just leave it this year.
Just use my unlimited phones data again and wait and see how things pan out with the competition when it’s up and running
