STARLINK (Satellite Internet and WIFI) -- How I Done It --

Looks like it's calculated down to the miniute..

Look it's now down to £29.95 !! After 10mins or so.

The new standby/sleep function looks good.

You can also switch of the snow melt heater completely to save some power.

Is the 50Gb enough to satisfy general interweb browsing on the Starlink? Didn't you run out of data at Summer Camp playing 'the tunes'? Fortunately I can't abide music so just general web browsage for me. Online rumour has it that Starlinks own upgrades burn through some serious data..? I'm close, but not quite ready for a cigar yet...

Yes.

50Gb will see you though, general internet stuff.

I didn't run out at summer camp, but burned through a good 25Gb, but that was streaming music day and night.

Running YouTube all night.

And uploading tons of pics and videos that I have set to automatically upload to the cloud.

But the £4.50 package is unlimited, so no cap.... Just slower speeds.

The only two reservations I have to fitting in the van permanently is:

1- Power draw, it's 25w constant. (No biggy if you have a lithium LB)

2- where to mount? (I haven't tested if it will see through the pop top roof with solar panels. I'm assuming it wont so needs to be mounted external? Or behind windscreen?)

Just for reference..

This is the speeds sitting in the backyard.

Starlink standby wifi. - 0.5/0.5Mbps

Hone wifi, Virgin Media. - 161/103Mbps

Mobile Vodafone 82.8/5.86Mbps

Mobile EE. 17.8/0.51Mbps

Thanks Dell! I just want to make sure a non Musk company isn't about to launch a competitive product, and will enter the Starlink fold if nobody looks likely...

Amazon have already launched the first tranche of satellites for Kuiper and it has its first commercial customers. Supposedly available to private punters early spring '26, so a non Musk competitive product is just round the corner.

Of course, Bezos is a Bond villain in his own way.

Thanks for the update @Dellmassive. Great to see a trusted review which verifies just how crippled, but in some ways still usuable, the £4.50 service will be.
Maybe once there's more competition we'll see a decent £10 pm offering (say 10mbps up/down) which will make this much better value.

Just one further question on the £4.50 plan. What about usage limits? Is there a cap on the amount of data used per month? Obv there's a theoretical limit based on speed but is there an actual data limit?

EDIT: Should have read properly. :)

I don't get why they don't (well I do) offer the £8 package to everyone. I sit on that at £8 for 20gb a month. I just let that tick over all year and spin up to £50 for a couple of summer months.
How do we get this please?
Or can't we now?

Don't know. I think it's available to early sign ups or something. I signed up for the mini the day it's was announced so don't know if that put me into some kind of group.

Scared to come off the plan as I'm sure it will be taken away from me at some point 🤣
The £8 20Gb is not even an option for me.

It's £4.50 or £50 fo me.

I literally signed up the week they changed it.

@Mick
@Jollyvan
@eli

Is this still an option for you guys?

I just found the data tab,

That shows the usage... 38 out of 50 I used.

For that period.

And now the following day the offer has dropped for the 50Gig upgrade.

Now down to £28.19.

I'll leave it running till Busfest..... Then decide if I want the faster speed or not.

The mobile signal at BF can be a bit iffy, due to the amount of people there swamping the network. So the starlink will help out at the van an campsite.

I am looking forward to the performance during Busfest of SL. It could tip me over the edge, or not!

I wonder if it can be fixed to a pair of roofbars and made to look like one of those roof-mounted light fittings (used for site work etc)

Wifey just sent me this pic of a gadget, but would it work through a screen cover?!

No, it will work through the windscreen (not quite as well as in the open) but not through a cover.

Needs a free line of sight to the sky and for best performance to point north.

Am I missing the point with Starlink? I use my data roaming all over the world and hot spot the phone when I'm working on the laptop. For about £2 a day it allows me to use my UK deal (EE) unlimited data. Im currently in Italy having travelled through France, Austria and Germany and had 5g all the way. Next stop Slovenia, Croatia and Greece who all have more 5g than the UK....whats the benefit of Starlink over my current set up?
