Squeaking Noise on Cold Start After Timing Belt Replacement

Hi all,

I’m trying to figure out a persistent squeaking noise on cold start with my T6.1 (2020).

The timing belt had to be replaced quite early at 65,000 km (40,000 miles) due to what the dealer said was a known issue on this model. Since the replacement, there has been a cyclic squeaking noise during cold starts.

They then replaced the belt tensioner under warranty, but the squeaking is still present on cold start.

The sound appears:
  • Right after startup when the engine is cold
  • Lasts briefly while the engine is running
  • Sometimes disappears after a short time as the engine warms up
Because this started only after the timing belt job, I suspect something related to the belt drive system (alignment, pulley, tensioner, idler, water pump etc.).

Has anyone experienced something similar after a timing belt replacement on a T6/T6.1?

Any ideas what could cause it or what I should ask the dealer to specifically check?

Almost certainly your Aux belt tensioner pulley, easy to swap it out from the wheel arch or above

I had the squeaking/whistling as you describe and while the van was in for servicing recently at my local indi they changed the Aux belt and tensioner. Noise gone and not too expensive, £347 including the interim service.
