Small daily and sort of main car

For a "sort of main car" perhaps something larger. The Skoda Rapid is an often forgotten about good value, useful car.
To be fair swmbo said to me today that we have the van if we want to go further afield, and the use of her mothers SUV if needed too. She wants to able to swing it easily into a parking space. It might get used to nip to Manchester to see the daughter now & then too.

We've got a Kia Sportage 2017 for her to run around in. It was about £17k four years ago but you can pick up pretty good examples for near £5k nowadays. I'd recommend it for a very safe car but it is a bit thirsty and not very powerful. My Mrs loves it though and it's got all the mod cons for very little. Korea do good cars. Admittedly it's not a little runaround but it is compared to a van hehe

Something like the below

Thanks all

So we have been out looking at cars today, and the car that stood out for just feeling decent was the Kia Picanto. I think we could scrape into a 2017/18 gen 3 car. Would love the GT Line but that would be closer to 6k.

But the gen 3 just seems a lot nicer inside than the gen 2.

Do not buy a Nissan Micra ! bought a new one a couple of years ago, as a small cheap runaround for the wife as we used the van if we went any distance ,"biggest piece of shit" I have ever owned ! sold it after a year ,we couldn't stand driving it any longer .Bought a 2018 mini cooper clubman to replace it ,cant believe I have never owned one of these before absolutely love it .Longest I have ever owned a car and still makes me smile when I get to drive it .

What was wrong with the Micra? A fella I know is a driving instructor and has one manual and one auto Micra. You can imagine what they get put through, but both have been faultless.

The old Micra's were good motors but the newer stuff isn't anywhere near as good .
I'm still craving a mini , never owned one before but am in the market for a little run around again soon so gonna be researching these .

mine had a turbo fault within 3 months of owning it ,maybe I just had a bad vehicle but it just felt very cheaply put together and gutless

Great little car, mine is just the cooper 150 brake diesel with the 8 speed auto box ,but goes pretty well when you want it to! hugs roundabouts like glue and feels proper go kart like ,and I have a Westfield in my garage so know the go kart feel ;).the build quality and feel of the interior is superb !

Audi A1 or VW polo. Stick with VAG, you will always get support and advice if needed
We had a 55 plate Polo 1.2S. Sold it with over 160,000mls on the clock and it never missed a beat. For some reason I have not yet got to the bottom of swmbo has a dislike of the A1. I think they are a little cracker. Again I had an A3 1.8T Sport with over 130,000mls and again it was solid as a rock.

Anybody running a Pug 108 with the 1.2 Puretech engine ?
My daughter did. Don't do it.

You think Transit wet belts are bad? The PukeTech is a different level of awfulness. Shame, because it went OK.

The 1.0 isn't a flying machine but is the very definition of reliability.

The 108 can rust, like the 107 before it, but that's easy to avoid by using your eyes and buying one that isn't rusty. Other than that's it's like a slightly grown up 107,slightly better trim, slightly better sound deadening, etc, but otherwise pretty much the same, which is a good thing indeed.

Thanks for the reply. So I think we have drawn up a list now. Starting in order of popularity.

Kia Picanto - 2017 on
Hyundai I10 - 2017 on
Toyota Aygo - 2017 on
Skoda Citigo - 2014 on

Went to look at a 2017 Picanto GT Line and it was a good looking thing. But it wasnt for us. We werent expecting it to go like the clappers, but in my opinion it was woeful. We went in my van which felt like a muscle car in comparison. Again didnt expect ultra refinement but road noise seemed extremely intrusive. And then finally just the feel of the cabin materials. Part of the problem is we were comparing it against a history of VAG cars and our current F60 Countryman Sport.

I think we are going back to the drawing board, although I think it will be an UP or a Citigo. Had them before and have always been impressed with the drive. I should have just gone that way. But its typical of me to act like a kid in a sweetshop.

Fiesta...

The more recent 1.2 Corsa uses the PSA 1.2 PukeTech from wet belt Hell.
