Hi guys

We give a friend of ours a lift once a week and she struggles to get in our T6.
I want to get some side bars anyway but are there any that would take the weight of person getting in?
Or are they all just cosmetic.

I personally wouldn't want to use my side bars as a step, but I think the main issue might be an elderly person might find them a little precarious to either attempt to stand on, or very slippy in the wet. My bars certainly wouldn't stick out enough to be able to stand on, but I don't know about other designs.

Yes there are plenty that you can stand on, there are two main types you have the choice of

1 round bars, these are normally oversized tubing with flattened sections that have a plastic step on, i use these on our van for my youngest lad as he struggled to get in and out
They are ok but an adult (especially someone elderly/not overly active etc) would struggle to get purchase with their foot as they are only approx 3 inches wide so it’s more toes on there rather than feet

2 full side steps, these are more like a running board/platform and are much larger and run the length of the van so can be stepped on anywhere and have more room for a bit of extra foot purchase, more practical but some may say less aesthetically pleasing ?

That’s the full board step style I think you would need
One thing to be careful of with the round ones is to make sure you see them fitted to a van, although I’m happy with mine and they have served a purpose I find it quite annoying that the rear step is centred on the sliding door, it looks good from the outside but the step is inline with the seat and not the gap in front of the seat which is where you want to step into
If you are using it for the front doors this obviously doesn’t apply but just a little quirk I thought I would point out
I searched for a while to find a three step set as I only have a single slider and didn’t want a step on the drivers side where there is no door

To me that is also difficult make choice between side bars or running boards but i think i more prefer put boards because can use them laik smal step if needed and think they more protect van from other road users on parkings, that what i think get to my van + extra charge they can fit lights To Fit 04-15 VW Transporter T5 LWB Aluminium Side Running Boards-Black- TYPE B | eBay

I'd say the standard sportline ones are cosmetic only and not suitable for standing on.....

But the ones listed above look good.
