Selling a vehicle but retaining personalised plate

Hi, just after a bit of advice. Tomorrow I may be selling my car privately. It currently has my personalised plates on. If the sale is agreed what is the process I should use to firstly retain my plates and then complete the transfer of the car ownership on the on line site. I know the process of paying the £80 retention but unsure if I can then straight away complete the sale with the original plates without waiting for a new v5. Thanks

If you take the cherished plate off online the current V5 instantly becomes void, and you'll need the serial number from the new V5 registration document before you can do the transfer of keeper bit. You don't know what that will be until the new V5 arrives.

Unless its someone you know and trust, it's best to do the plate swap well ahead sale and get new V5 in place.

Just to add (and this might not be much help in your present circumstance) I always put my number on retention and put the original number back BEFORE I advertise for sale - that way there is no confusion on the buyer's behalf as to what he/she is actually buying. - HTH

Also, does the new owner trust you? When I sold mine, I had taken the plate off a week before, but the new V5 didn't arrive for at least 10 days. The fella was happy to drive it away on trade plates, trusting that I'd send him the new V5 as soon as it arrived. The risk from my point of view was until the new keeper was officially transferred, I could be responsible for any tickets he may pick up.

Yes I’ve already stated that as advertised
