We did it last November and had about a week, but we had a bit of iffy weather and many places were like ghost towns-even the pubs weren't open.
But in terms of scenery it’s fantastic.
All the little places along the SW coast are great such as Newton Stewart, Kirkudbright, Gatehouse of Fleet.
Kipford is nice and nearby Sandyhills beach (from previous trips in the summer).
Worth a trip to the Mull of Galloway lighthouse for the amazing sunset over the Morne Mountains of Ireland.
When we went, we had decent weather, but even then Newton Stewart was completely closed on the Sunday we arrived . Whilst that was mildly inconvenient, the whole area is all the better for maintaining traditional values - friendly, polite folks; clean & free public toilets (with hot water!); free parking; quiet, pothole-free roads... it was like I remember life was when I was a kid. And, as Si says, the scenery is fantastic.
Don't know about the SW300 specifically, but we were in Dumfries and Galloway last week - see my posts on Where Have You Been: Where Have You Been In Your Van Today?
Plenty of wild campers at Loch Doon, which isn't far off the route, and the campsite is only 18 quid a night if you need to refill/recharge etc. Girvan is a dump but you can park overnight on the front for 10 quid
We love the East coast. It's a great trip to go along the coast from Edinburgh to Inverness.
We are considering heading up there on Wednesday and lurking on the coast from Inverness to Duncansby Head looking for Orca. We have 10 days spare.
Worth noting that “wild camping” in Scotland does not include motorised vehicles. Widely misunderstood. Exceptions to access rights are defined here: Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003
