Photo of a T5.1 with roof tents my parents took in Switzerland. They have just returned from a 3 week holiday in their T5 camper, both just turned 70 by the way.

Not sure what you do for a toilet in the middle of the night, wouldn't fancy the ladders.

This was ours until we sold the Touareg.

Getting out to pee on a wet night was one of the reasons we now have a Cali on order...
Getting up there after 2 bottles of wine was another...

Is yours the only Cali with a loo?!

We mixed free camping with site stays; finding a loo for the former was definitely vital and it's funny how standards drop - the ultimate in "luxury" when free camping is a loo nearby that is cleaned regularly and is open all day and night - far rarer than you'd think.

While you can get cassette loos and similar, you either need to go in the van (!) or still find somewhere to go. We mostly found something half decent but a couple of sites required full blown "free toilet-ing" - definitely not ideal but sometimes the view makes it worth it.

With an awning room on the side one can put a porta loo in there for emergencies, but would try and go over to the amenities if possible...

We only ever use the roll out awning - you hang hang a solar shower off it (it's quite strong) though which came in handy several times. Our previously well used pop up tent didn't get a single airing this time - just didn't need it.

With free camping, much the same as being caught short on the road, you definitely take it as it comes which is possibly easier on the boys than the girls. Having said that continental attitudes often tend to be a bit more relaxed about these things that the Brits.

For those that are shy then how about one of these, Khyam Shower / Toilet Tent | Ridgi-dome | Khyam Tents. We have eventually ditched the cumbersome drive away and bought one of these as a store come pitch parker. If you are shy you could use this and a bucket or be really posh and use one of these, Popaloo - The Portable Camping Toilet. All of which take up minimals space and weight.
