Robot Lawn Mowers

Concrete over yer lawn- bosh! I’ve just redesigned/redeveloped our garden. Mower went in the skip hammer throw style. Felt good watching the parabola flight path and huge crash as it landed. Gertcha!!
Well, it's yours to do with as you wish, but I do enjoy sitting with my cup of tea at 6.30 every morning watching Pied Wagtails foraging for their breakfast in my lawn, I'm not sure they'd enjoy the "prison exercise yard" look quite as much.

Ahh well that’s where you’re wrong see. Plenty of Pied Wagtailery still going on. We’ve retained the trees, red acers, fig trees etc. Tons of bird activity. Even at 06.30. Probably…

I don’t get why anyone would want to automate this task, mowing the lawn is the most therapeutic thing you can do in my book.

Give me your address and I’ll come round, I’m already doing the lawn opposite our house. My goal is to one day have a need to own a sit on mower
We have a ride on mower and it’s the pride & joy of Mrs Spuds. She gets great satisfaction from spending a couple of hours on a large red beast….

Did think about one of these we have a robot vacuum cleaner which works well but the dog keeps attacking it he's a border terrier and thinks it's going to get his toys. Not sure what he would think of one in the garden as well.

The only downside (that I can think of) of a Robot Mower compared to a ride on mower is that a Robot Mower is a "one trick pony", it can mow, whereas a ride on mower can do a large number of tasks, mowing, towing trailers, scarifiers, trailed fertilizer spreaders and rollers.

My ride on cuts grass. Nothing more nothing less. You must have a mini tractor
Mine are John Deeres like those pictured on post 28, all the marketing blurb refers to them as ride on mowers, they can tow but have no 3 point linkage or PTO.

I started this season with an Ecovacs GOAT 0800 RTK (a Which? magazine recommendation) for £550 and so far I am very pleased with it. Obviously it has a recharging point that has to have power nearby, and it also has a separate satellite receiver that connects to the recharge point. It was easy enough to set up by “driving” it via the phone app around the boundary and is programmed to cut each day. It has a rain sensor that sends it scurrying back to the home charge station whenever it rains.
If I have any problem with it, it is that it seems to follow the exact same path each time, and so some turn points in tight corners or on the slope in front of the grandkids swing have become bare patches from the wheels always turning it in the same place.

It needs to last a few years to be a worthwhile purchase, so time will tell, but its better than finding time to mow the lawn on dry days just before the garden waste bin gets emptied!
