Power Steering Pump - Replacement Procedure

I will keep you posted! Strange thing happened yesterday. I decided to not be so light with the steering. I went lock to lock as fast as I could for around 30 seconds. The steering went lighter and the vibrations/noise was drastically reduced. I went for a drive and it felt close to no issue and great. When I stopped and reversed onto the drive, it went heavy again and vibrating like mad. I also have this strange thing where if I turn it to full lock clockwise, it gets about 1/4 away from the end and goes spongy. I can force it through the last bit but then when steering it back, it vibrates and makes a loud noise.
Very similar to what I had the first time round. I suspected it was an airlock at the time, but it was too late - the poor pump installation has killed the pump (hence the swarf).

So update time!!

The steering us now working as it should.

Advice: Don't use non genuine ps pipes even if they look to be the same etc... I had one made and matched to my original one by a local hydrolic company. On inspection I found big chunks of swarf within the pipe and this could have been what killed my original pump. I mean getting rid of swarf on pipe work is pretty standard stuff and I am shocked they left it in this state. Anyhow, it's all sorted now and back to how it should be.

Great news and perseverance!

Can I get one of these filters to use with my 1.9 T5 or are they model specific? I'm thinking it might be a good idea as I'm in the middle of replacing my rack and pump.

!there just a generic

Thanks!
There just a generic magnetic filter 👍

Hi Folks,

I've had a look in downloads, and I can't seem to find anything around the procedure for replacing the Power Steering Pump on my T6.

Does anyone know of anywhere I can find this procedure myself.

(Long story short - A garage fitted a new rack and pump to my van, Two racks, and three subsequent pumps later and I still have pump issue...metal in system, and a lot of groaning at slow speeds. I suspect the garage that did the work didn't bleed it properly and got air trapped in the system).

Thanks!
Did you have any joy with this? I’m looking to do mine

Yes, did it in on the drive (pump that is, not the rack).

AC needs holding out the way if you have it. Took a couple of hours.
Also followed the Meyle Pump bleed procedure which can be found online.

Thank you, from what I can see the only bit the concerns me is the Aux belt and not sure how to take off, how does the tensioner work?
Just knock the tensioner off, and remove the belt. We did that and got it out the way.

turn the tensioner with a ratchet/spanner, then you need a pin to lock it out of the way. This removes all tension of the Aux belt.

If you have AC you need to move the compressor out of the way (3 long bolts) pull the compressor down and cable/ratchet tie it out of the way. The pump has two pipes that need to come off (have a container ready to catch power steering fluid) and 3 bolts at the front and one from the rear holding it to the engine. I dropped the offside sub-frame very slightly, just enough to squeeze the pump through. Fitting the new pump is reverse of removal. Use a lever bar on the sub frame to get more room.
