Ply-lining - Diy Or Dealer Fitted?

I've done some searching of the forum but can't find any real info on this.

My T6.1 is on order and the dealer has added £230 for ply-lining. I want it lining but I was also hoping to do some soundproofing. I'll also be installing some racking and carpet.

So should I save the £230 and do the ply-lining myself? Is it hard to do? Is the ply just screwed into the inner metal skin of the van?

Do it yourself. The dealer will just screw it to the metalwork. If you do it yourself you can use hidden trim fixing like these. That way no holes drilled into the bodywork.

I bought a used set off ebay and just used existing holes in the wood straight to metal work, after checking theyd be in good places best i could. After getting some screws and carpetting panels too whole lot was about 150.

Interesting - thanks.

Do you know of any info regarding the ply lining. I've looked on YouTube but the best I can find is a time-lapse. No real info on thickness of ply, how to cut, how/where to fix etc.

Just for balance....

I've always just let the dealer do it (panel vans)

Then if needed just just unscrew a panel to get behind it.... if it's done well, they will use silicone at the floor joints which can be a pain to cut.

Though the above comments are valid...... I didnt have the time to DIY...at the time.

But I did a few months later . . . . . At which point I unscrew panels and run cables and fitted lights, but didn't bother with insulation.

I've also carpeted the same panels etc....

One of the ply suppliers on ebay (paintball4sale) also supplies screw fixings that knock into the existing holes in the metalwork. Screws are visible but no extra unwanted holes in the metalwork. Not used them but on the shortlist.

Flooring - not sure?? I’d probably buy some of the plastic cups/spacers used on the kombi floor lashing points and us them to hold the ply in place or smaller hole and metal spacers and bolt the lashing eyes on top of the ply.

You could buy a ply kit like this:

VW T6 Transporter SWB Camper / Day Van Interior Panels 3.6mm Ply Lining Trim Kit | eBay

All the holes already drilled. Put in the hidden clips, carpet, and push into place. Easy to pull off again if you need to get behind. Or if not carpeting you can reuse the OEM clips.

If you get a set pre-drilled panels from a supplier, after my own experience, I'd open the holes out a little before inserting the clips. It'll allow for a bit of tolerance on the final fit.
