Please help! I need new tyres on my bus, currently I have 255/35ZR 102W fitted, however, can I fit 97W instead??? These have only done 7000 miles and are rubbish. Can I legally put 97s on and will I still be covered?

It depends on axle weights, not overall van weight. You would have to check your axle weights on a label under the bonnet behind the air filter box, but a T28 panel van usually has 1600 front, 1550 rear I think from memory, so a 100 load rating would meet the requirements of both axles.

I would advise you to double check that though and not just take my word for it!

You will only find a 102 load rated tyre in the 255/35 20 size in the real budget brands. None of the mid range or premium offerings will do that size.

A 255/40 will give you 101 load rating and would definitely be rated high enough for your van, so perhaps look at that size instead.

Im sure those axle weights are correct, but agree its worth checking the label under the bonnet.

Does the 255/40 101 fit a 20” alloy?

It’s so frustrating that all 102s are budget tyres, I only got 7000 miles out of them.

As long as it’s a 255/40 R20 yes.

Unusually low mileage for any tyre. Is your van lowered? Have you had the wheel alignment checked? What tyre pressures have you been running? Is the wear even, out front or rear only? Edges of the tyres or the middle of the tread?

I wore out a set of Nexens in about 8k miles on 19s. The wear was perfectly even across the tyres as well, so I dont think gemoetry or pressures had anything to do with it. And I drove it like a granny. :/
