Passenger door not opening from inside or outside - Help!

Yeh remove the external handle, then disconnect the cable from it to rule out any tension stopping the mechanism from being operated correctly by the internal handle/cable

Forgive my ignorance, how can I remove the external handle without opening the door? It looks like the barrel needs to be removed first

I assumed it was the passenger side?
Is it drivers?

Yes it's the drivers side, sadly. So unable to take lock out

To update, managed to open the door by using a drill on hammer setting at low speed to vibrate the lock. Popped open within about 20 seconds! So relieved. Make thanks for your help anyway.

I had this problem and thanks to the advice from in this thread and others, managed to solve it.
In my case, the catch that the external handle operates was stuck in the 'pulled' position, which prevented the (driver's) door being opened from either the internal or external handles.
Removing the lock cover and cable allowed me to get a thin screwdriver inside the door and after a few light taps with a hammer, the door latch on the inside opened the door.
Now I know how the catch operates, I would also try using a hooked piece of wire to push the latch back to it's position.
