Newly converted electrics concerns

Please forgive my lack of knowledge in regards to the electrical side of my new camper I’ve just got back from the converters however I’m a bit confused about the smart charger which has been fitted, I requested a Victron smart charger, with in mind it would charge my leisure battery as I drove from my vans alternator, this being because it’s a stop and start so from researching I understood that this was necessary, however what they have fitted is a 12v / 7a blue smart charger by Victron which only powers on once connected to electrical hook up. I can only connect to Bluetooth at this time also. My question is, is this correct and is it charging my battery as I drive? As it appears to be off besides when it is plugged in via ehu. Thanks in advance

You need both.

That Victron smart charger is for mains charging. When on 240 or EHU .

You need a DC-DC charger for when the engine is running... You may have one fitted.? Or an older style split charge relay?

Post some pics of your setup... We'll see if we can see anything extra .

Photos attached, I can see the votronic at the back, however not sure if this is the dc to dc (which I never requested so not sure how good it is if this is my smart charger)

That votronic unit could well be a DC-DC, I’ve got one that looks a lot like that, but the model number isn’t clear from that photo.

If it is, you can verify it’s working by measuring the voltage at the leisure battery before and after the engine is started.

Isn’t the Votronic the dc-dc charger?
And the Victron is for EHU.

I believe it is, and this is where the confusion has came from. They have basically not listened to any specific requests, the Voltage does indeed increase when I turn the engine on via the Victron ehu app (still plugged in)

So, is votronic good? Or should I be requesting for it to be changed

More later nfo on charging here....

Ok, so assuming the victron app is just measuring battery voltage even when EHU is off then it’s likely the votronic is working if the voltage rises when the engine is started. What does the voltage go from/to?

It’s fine, I use both a votronic DC-DC and solar MPPT and they’ve been great. They don’t tend to have as much monitoring support as the smart victron range but there’s nothing wrong with them.

It only went up by 1 or 2 volts, however this was just on startup stationary. Okay, il just stick with this one then, can I use Victron mppt solar with this or is it a case of I need to stick with votronic now

No, you can use a victron MPPT, no problem.

If you want to monitor your leisure battery from your phone you could fit one of these, they work really well and show if the leisure battery is being charged and it gives you an idea of how much charge is in the battery- lots of people on here use them
