Hi all
After months of searching for a good base camper van . Got me a
102bhp trendline
deep black
lwb, sat nav, aircon
Reg jan 2017 with 9900 miles on the clock. Bought from Vw in Birmingham. Drove the van for about 60 miles. Was picking up from birmingham and driving back home to glasgow. Then the yellow engine light (EML) came on. Called the dealer they said to keep driving for a about half an hour see if it went out.
It never went out , i managed to get the van into there preston dealers and they got the fault code up - think it was restricted airflow or similar at egr valve. So they cleaned it all out and done a regen . I think. Was there for two hours.
The van drive from preston to glasgow was great, felt more power and just a bit more guts about it.
I've got a 13 month vw warranty with the van. Plus i can hand the keys back for the next 30 days etc
But now im paranoid. Literally half an hour driving and i get a fault code . Love the van but is this something to be concerned with?
Im planning a camper conversion as well.
Looking forward to getting involved in the forum as well.
Thanks barry

I'd say get back on the horse and give VW Assist a call and they'll be out to sort it in the morning.

VW appreciation restored. (Under Warranty)

Yeah, il stay with it. The guys in preston seemed to do the trick and said ot can happen if vans arent getting good motorway runs.
Il just put it down to a tad of semi bad luck. Got home and loaded the van with mountain bike gear.
So im just on the vw train now i think.

You have probably sorted it with the remainder of your drive home. If all the previous miles were short trips then it could well have been clogged up.

Pete

If it was me.. I would hand it back.. you do get some bad apples in the bunch.. for me I'd be always wondering what's next

Really?

I got vw to check everything and the van has never had an issue until yesterday. Quick clean of the egr and running well.

I would keep it and drive it as much for the next 30 days and see what happens, hopefully nothing, then if you keep it you still have the warranty. Theres loads of us with niggling problems on here and loads with no problems at all

Are you sure it was the EGR valve? I would think it's more likely the DPF filter clogging up after only 9000 miles?

If it was the DPF - Run it on decent fuel, not supermarket crap, maybe put some diesel additive in it (I use the Redex fuel system cleaner - https://amzn.to/2D1BZmB) and give it a run whenever you hear the fan staying on after you've switched off the ignition.

Hi , i stoppped at the preston vw garage and they said they cleaned out the egr and also the said they done a regen. Il put some decent fuel in as well.
Its a shame feels a bit tainted now. I've asked the dealer to call . I want them as a minimum to extend the 30 day period and also extend the warranty.
Lovely van though . Absolutely imaculate

I run mine, and my car, 100% on "supermarket crap" fuel and have never ever had a problem on any vehicle over 100s of thousands of miles and wouldn't dream of paying more. I know some people are almost evangelical about using "premium" fuel but I believe it's greatly overstated and has an element of 'emperor's new clothes' about it. I've never found it made a scrap of difference.

I totally agree with that sentiment.
I also have never had a problem and we used to encourage our lads in the work Van's to fill up with supermarket fuel.

Is there room under that rock for two

Premium fuels have additional additives, there was a long running thread on Pistonheads about it. Contrary to popular belief premium fuels are not the same as supermarket fuels, I forget the exact technicalities but there were sufficient benefits to using them and paying extra. I still use supermarkets when needs must, but I use additional additives on each fill up.

I'm not looking at the scientific claims, and I don't dispute they have additives, what I do dispute is that they can mean the difference between having or not having engine problems in a run of the mill vehicle like a 2 litre Transporter, and I believe that those people who always use premium fuel for peace of mind are being taken for mugs by clever fuel company marketing and needlessly throwing away a huge amount of money over the lifetime of the vehicle(s) for no benefit. Others may have found different results but I can only go by my own experience.

I was lead to believe that the supermarkets buy the tail end of the batch and that fuel, like most things, has a sell by date. Not sure how true that is but I'd rather put my own additives in than have a mix of other resellers. I presume it all comes from the same places....

<Can we get a bigger rock for one more?>

Mine did exactly the same when I picked it up, 3 miles from the dealership it started to do a regen, all was fine for another 150 miles and then the yellow EML came on. Called VW Assist and was advised so long as no loss of power it was safe to carry on my way. Got it booked into local dealer who checked it over and reset everything, no problems since.

Was told not a good idea to run it low on fuel (there was 8 miles of range when I collected it) and the fact that it had been sat idle at the dealers for a few weeks may have contributed too.

There used to be a belief that branded fuel was cleaner and more efficient than supermarket fuel but, the fact is that, all the diesel you buy will conform to EU standard EN590. Petrol is EN228. That means that the fuel you get from a BP forecourt is exactly the same as the fuel you'd get from Shell, Texaco, Morrisons, Tesco, Asda etc etc forecourts.

If you want some additives in your fuel the premium versions all carry them in one form or another with the selling point being fuel efficiency, cleaner burning and engine longevity. In terms of performance yes, you'd likely notice some improvement as these premium versions are heavier in certane/octane but I'd doubt you'd be able to measure much difference in engine wear between the two fuel versions over a 100k miles.

Thanks , this makes me feel a bit better . I've done 400 miles since the preston garage cleaned the egr, and done the regen.
All is good so far.

Like I said, there was a long running thread on PH and the premium fuels do have additional additives over and above supermarket fuel and there are long term benefits to using better quality fuels. They may all confirm to that EU standard, but the better fuel exceeds those levels and/or has additional benefits, but I forget exactly which.

I know a VW van isn’t a Ferrari, but I only use the best oil, fuel and parts on all of my vehicles.

Edit - I think it was this thread - Buying petrol/diesel from Tesco vs Shell/BP/Total etc.... - Page 1 - General Gassing - PistonHeads

Or maybe this one - Help me learn more about petrol - Page 1 - General Gassing - PistonHeads

Hi Barry, I bought my 18plate Caravelle from VW Birmingham last December and I stopped for fuel on my way home and the van wouldn’t lock probably I called them and the said to me to try it again when I got home. By that time they know you are to far away to want to return to them which then makes it a problem for another dealership. Since December mine has been to VW Wrexham 5 times with various faults that were reported within the first week of owning the vehicle. VW Birmingham also avoid returning calls and emails. I got to the point of calling the Head office in Northwich ( also as much use as a chocolate fire car). My last email to Dave Brady ( apparently he is a sales manager) saying they can buy the Caravelle back from me, shockingly enough I got no response.
Thanks
Chris

To put across the other side. I bought a used T6 last December. I had a few niggles, (leaky 3rd brake light, cracked grill, faulty internal ceiling light) The dealership was 400 mile round trip, so I told them I didn't want to drive all the way down and back a couple of days later. So they sent up a courtesy Caddy, picked up my van and returned it a few days later, all sorted. Just in case anyone wants to know I dealt with Richard Sterna at Vindis Van Centre.
