Just in process of buying T6.1 camper, with 5 speed box, engine has just been remapped 150 bhp. Van been owned by vw to date 70k miles. Should I buy or stay clear?

Have had remaps on previous cars and have been okay and reliable, just wondered if anyone had experience with this engine/gearbox combination.

Not sure about T6.1's but some owners of 5 speed T6's have had gearbox issues after remapping. There us a reason VW limit 150bhp to 6 speed manuals and dsg.

Greetings.

The 5 speed box isn't weak as such, but it can trace its ancestry back to Jesus and the torque capacity is quite limited, around 340NM.

A good mapper will keep the torque within that, and will limit the torque in lower gears to protect the cogs. A vendor of generic maps won't do this, so ask alot of questions around that - the importance of thet cannot be overstated.

Otherwise the engine itself should handle it just fine.

Having said all that, the 5 cog is far and away the most common unit yet most of the transmission problem posts on here are for the less numerous 6 speed and DSG transmissions, so if the remapper is clever youll be no worse off.

I drove a 110b hp remapped to 180bhp and I couldnt tell the difference. Nothing against remapping having had cars sucessfully remapped in the past.

To be fair I could tell little difference between a 199, 150 or 110, but when you've just climbed off a Hayabusa pretty much anything feels turgid.

Know what you mean the pinnacle of my biking career was a Blackbird. Scared the crap out of me, much happier with an 1100 Hornet.

Im looking at something more of a cruiser style, perhaps a VMAX if I can find a clean one at a good price (apologies for going off topic!)
Yes I apologise too, one last comment. I agree I always said my return to biking would be on more of custom styled bike.
