My mileage has disappeared/become intermittent after adding a 240v earth under driver seat, or disconnecting the battery has done it?

I haven't a clue what im doing but i could swear after installing a 240v hook up today and earthing it to the ground under the driver seat my mileage now only shows when i stop and, then disappears when i drive again, doing a google search i have come across literally 2 other people mention this and one of them mentioned this happend to them after an earth or ground came lose in there T5 under the bonnet.

I am sure my mileage constantly showed on the display before adding the 240v earth cable to under my driver seat today. The only thing i can think is that i wasnt supposed to do this with the 12v brown cable still attached? does any one have any ideas? have i done something stupid? thanks in advance.

Probably not relevant, but the mileage gets changed for the set speed or cruise control icon when that is turned on. Have you knocked that on when fumbling about?

I thought the same as @dubber36 reading your post but if no ACC it can't be that. I'm sure there's someone on here who can help you.

No. The scenario reminded me of a phone call I got from my wife when she was out in her Golf. "My milage has disappeared and there's a funny shape thing on the dash. What's wrong with it?" Being unable to diagnose the fault over the phone, when she got home I had a look and found she'd hit the cc switch.

Do you have some pics of the screen? Do you get any other icons where the milage would normally be displayed?

Ah i see, i was hoping you meant speed alert as i did set that up again today due to everything being reset from disconnecting the battery, so i thought ahh bet its that, lol, no def know cruise control icon, in fact i wish lol.

not handy, everything else appears to be there and ok although it was all set to 0 due to the removal of battery connections for the earth install i was doing today. i literally put an earth under the driver seat for my 240 consumer unit and disconnected the black battery connection, when i drover afterwards i new something was missing and couldn't remember what, when i pulled up at the lights, bingo the mileage was back, and then off it went when i set off again lol and so on all the way to work.

But otherwise literally nothing in its replacement, i went through all the settings and everything was as it was previously, the only change made was i entered 70 in to the speed alert setting, but i dont think its that?

I assume you had stop/start active when the mileage showed up at the traffic lights? And the milage comes back on with engine off but ignition on? Sorry for the questions, just trying to narrow things down.

yes thats right, and no problem at all, it seems to basically only go when im in motion.

well that was weird, after spending 3 hours reading online for the same or similar problem i decided to go and double check the earth i did earlier remembering i hadn't left it as tight as it was when i undid it to begin with, however i certainly wouldnt call it lose, ( i dont think a piece of paper would of fit in the gap ) but anyway did as tight as i could within reason, took it for a spin, problem gone..... not sure if its sheer coincidence or what, even bigger coincidence that the only person i could find online with a similar problem said it was an earth under the bonnet that had come lose but had the same affect, could this be a more common issue that nobody ever gets to the bottom of because it doesnt really make sense? who knows, problem fixed anyway ( i hope and for now ) right next problem...

That's good news. I've just spent 15 mins in my van scouring the menus trying to find something that may alter what's shown while stopped/moving. I even set the speed warning as you mentioned you had and went for a quick drive just incase it did the same but as you can probably imagine it didn't. Well if a bad earth was the issue for someone else it stands to reason its the same for you given the work you've done today. Exactly why it happens is way beyond me but at least this thread is here to be found for others having the same problem.
