Mechatronic unit failure - recommendations?

Hoping for some help here. I have a 2018 T6 7-speed DSG and the mechatronic unit has failed after breakdown at about 25,000 miles. Out of warranty with VW and have been quoted 3k for replacement, oils and labour. Inchcape VW Manchester already requested a contribution from VW which was rejected.

Would you take a hit on the 3k with VW or look towards a local mechanic? If so, can anybody suggest somebody in the Manchester area that specialises in DSG repair and would be capable?

Cheers.

oh pants . . .

what happend with the breakdown?

25k is extreamly low miles for a 2018 van - whats it been doing while parked up? (this may be a contributing factor if the oils are just draining to the bottom of the DSG box and possible corrosion setting in during the off time)

I've had a few DSG VW vans and all have lasted full-term with just the DSG service as required.

if VW will not help with any warranty it might be worth getting a quote from a Local Gearbox specialist? ( for a recondition)

it needs fixing . . . . so either 3rd party or VW.

or look at a swap out from a crash damaged van - get your local VAG place to fit a replacement box.

quick google search shows a second hand box @ £2k . . . . . with no labour.

if that's the case id let VW deal with it and get a 2year warrently with the repair.

Was on M62, started revving as if stuck in certain gear so couldn't accelerate. Pulled over and then it was entirely tanked with no engine start and stuck in park. Took the AA about 14 hours to get the vehicle back home. Initial error said something like 'gearbox module failure' and VW confirmed it was mechatronic unit gone. It's had a low usage year or two with me working from home with covid. You may well be right.

With 2k for the unit alone, 3k is relatively reasonable in the circumstances to me. Other costs were put down to oils etc.

I have contacted VW heathrow who I purchased with to see if they can do anything, then as you say might have to give the go ahead with the repair at VW Manchester.

Thanks for your help.

sounds like a plan . . .

maybe in future make sure you take it for a drive once a week untill it gets up to temperature.

a 10mile round trip should do it.?

that should help keeping the oils spread about.

Just to clarify - above link for 2k is entire gearbox?

As far as I understand, they are quoting 3k for replacement mechatronic unit only. Looks to be around £1,200.

yes i think so . . . £2k for the whole box complete as a swap out.

the mech` unit can be serviced . . . but VW will do the normal procedure and replace for new. - then give you 24mnth warrenty.

.......

a gearbox specialist will be able to strip down and rebuild the whole box including the mech unit - seeing as yours only has 18k miles so basically new.

but are you in a position to be without the van for the repair?

be bothered sorting it out yourself?

know of a local gearbox specialist?

know of a local VAG indy workshop?

etc etc .

you need to weigh up all the above - to get sorted yourself.

or just pay vw and have the van back next week.?

try these guys . . . call them and as them for advice?

let us know what they say.

Gotcha - I'll get some clarity on what exactly they plan to replace for the 3k. I think price dependant rather than anything else. So if they can repair or replace the mechantronic for under 2k possibly, if not I'd say hardly worth it and leave it with VW.

I've put out request for some recommendations for local DSG gearbox specialists.

Will let you know what happens. Thanks for the help again.

I’ve used Tameside Transmissions many years ago to repair a destroyed first gear and selector fork in my merc SLK. They were recommended to me at the time and did a good job.
There’s also a well reviewed auto gearbox place in Huddersfield that I spoke to the other week about the torque converter on my S4.
they apparently pick up and drop off and cover Manchester too.
