Lost key

We have lost one of our van keys. It's in the house for sure but no danger it is turning up any time soon.

VW want £400 (?!?!?!?!? WTF?!?!?!) for a new one including coding. Coding is only £66 so the main expense is the key itself.

Is there a cheaper way to aquire a blank key for cutting/programming?

This will not help you as such but to give some context. When I brought my van I only had 1 key so I got a local guy to cut and code 2 3rd party keys for £80 on the drive in about 15 mins. I guess, if you dont mind it not being OEM for the spare you should be able to get it a lot cheaper.

Agreed just find a local auto locksmith company, they generally come to you and make a spare, i would expect to pay circa 150

That's pretty much what everyone from Dacia to Volvo charges. People want secure keys that are hard to intercept, block, relay or crack then thats what it costs.

You can get aftermarket options, as mentioned by Brother Soldas, but whether theyre multiple frequency agile and secure from signal blocking or signal snatching and the like is very much open to question.

The one time I needed a new key (I dropped my keys and the bloody thing wouldn't start the car after that) was fkr my XC90, and I swallowed the near £400 cost. Having worked in autocrime I decided I wasn't going to risk losing a 50 grand vehicle for the sake of saving a couple of hundred.

Good tips, thanks guys. I didn't even know that was possible these days (thought the coding etc might no longer be possible). I'll see who I can find.

Just to add that VW can disable the key over the air (VW dealer told me whilst fleecing me for my new key) - but once it is disabled it won't be able to be re-enabled.

Yeah, that has occured to me (as we turned the house upside down). Which tags did you go for?

I used an auto locksmith for our Up! Key as only came with one. Had a quote for sons C2 from same guy £260

Thanks all for the advice. Been quoted £190 by a well regarded local company. Bit of a pain but better than £400.

Cheers.

Insurance claim? If u have cover…I claimed for an Audi key a couple of years back…doesn’t go down as a fault claim..well mine didn’t

Like I say, it's usually an add-on / separate policy. So wouldn't be something you would be expected to declare on your motor insurance.
Just be aware. I did this a few years ago. Did not think would be declared etc. Did not affect no claims bonus etc. Yet when renewal came through etc it was down as a no fault claim.... Key replacement from memory. Or even no claims accident.... so was visible etc. I put my key in a glass (of water) for safe keeping....
