Life with Nelson the T6.1 Acura Camper

Forgot to update the thread.

So we did two weeks (17 nights) around Scotland and

we covered 1381.2 miles
used £199.00 worth of diesel on the trip but add on to that, we filled up in Aberdeen to head home then I did two commutes to work which was 120 miles included in that final fill up.

No issues cropped up, mechanics wise however, when it rained heavy the left hand B pillar had water coming in.

It was tracked down to poor citing of a hole where an LED strip light on the awning' wires come into the bus. The hole was drilled close to the gutter with gaffer tape covering it. WTF!!
Vasoline temporarily sorted it, I will seal it properly in due coarse.

Ok, heres on for you knowledgeable bunch!

I currently have the round style side bars on the bus and love the look of them:

However, the usual rust has set in the passenger side, above, isn't as bad as the drivers side bar which is completely beyond looking half decent.

The brackets are mounted and bolted secure already (please do ignore the hack job on the undertrays, not my work).

My question is, if I undo the bolt securing the actual side bar to the brackets so I dont have to remove them, are all replacement side bars the same lengths etc etc?

I have no idea who made these but I do like the look of the Leighton Vans ones, especially as they are near work!

Thanks :)

I am shocked at what shit quality all these side bars are, there’s none that are made of decent quality stainless or with proper coating that actually lasts

I agree, trying to find out who's I have fitted is a minefield too, I think Vanstyle but could be wrong. The drivers side one has blistered and cracked!

I am in the same boat. Mine are flaking at the end but otherwise still solid. Only a matter of time before they need replacing though.

Are the trapezoidal ones longer lasting or much the same?

Stainless ones coated black for me next for sure.

I think the trapezoidal ones fare better, reading comments.

Noticed spots of oil in the garage so, over time I kept an eye on it. It has got a little worse but not drastically worse.

Called up Fullers and chatted to there mechanical department, without quibble they said bring him in at my convenience to get it sorted (dropped off this past Friday morning) - phone call mid afternoon and they confirmed it’s the crank seal.

One genuine vw one ordered (comes with the housing), again no problem.

Trapezoid ones are nice but perhaps a little too trendy. Don't get me wrong, I like my Trapezoid ones cause they are sound and new but I possibly prefer round ones. My black gloss round ones were perished and all the bolts snapped when I removed them so they had to go.

I need to look into replacing what I have in more depth, not yet had chance mind! I was thinking leave the brackets in place for the round one currently fitted and replace the bars but I have no idea what make they are! They look like van style..
I have a plan in mind though :)

Get some 1 1/2” waste pipe from Screwfix with a swept bend each end. Spray black. It will look the same, cost less than £10/side, weigh far less, won’t corrode and when you can’t get your jack in to change a wheel you can rip it off.
