Leave Vehicle in P error

Hi All

A couple of weeks ago I had this error message when getting in the vehicle, a quick google and look here, suggested it may clear and that it didn't impact use of van.

While it did initially clear, we have just driven back from Alps and it started appearing more frequently and now won't clear at all. It appears to be a known issue so couple of questions I hope people can help with?

1. I purchased from Parkway VW Leicester with a warranty, is it likely to be covered by this?
2. Rough idea of costs if it isn't covered
3. Any recommendations for independent VW around Northampton - I don't have much faith in main dealers from experience!

Apart from warning, really pleased with van on trip to and from Alps. T6.1 2020 4Motion

Can you take the key out when not in Park?

I had this issue and the original suspicion was the Micro switch that engages when in park allowing for key to be removed safely. new switch didnt solve problem. Eventually diaagnosed as play in the selector which was replaced under the all-in- warranty. problem solved

might not be the same but mine is a 2019 T6

other thought - is the van sensing a door is open? what does the message say exactly?

I have similar experiences with Leicester Parkway and avoid. If warranty in place I think you will be covered

Can't take key out unless it is in Park

The error message is - "Only leave vehicle in Position P. Please visit workshop"

I don't think it's sensing a door open, not showing as such.

To answer your first question........ I had the same message and had it replaced under warranty by VW.
(Replaced under 12 month approved used warranty as my van was 4 years old when I bought it)
It's likely to be a defective microswitch in the gear selector or its accumulated some dust/debris, mine was intermittent..... less so when it was dry, and worse when damp conditions.

Well this is slowly doing my head in, although there are a few small positives

Called Parkway - yes they can look at it and likely to be covered under warranty, but they had no trace of the warranty (that they sold me). After a while they found it, it's an RAC Warranty which they said I could use anywhere. Based on the details they provided I then went and set up my warranty account and can see I do indeed have a warranty - which is good!
Called VW in Bicester - would charge to look at (fair enough) but need van for 2 days and don't offer courtesy cars. Not ideal to be without
Called my usual garage who do all the servicing and they are a)booked solid and b) hinted it would be best to go back to dealer for this
With my new warranty info I tried their book a repair service and there does appear to be a Approved garage very near to where OH works, so have emailed them to ask if they could help.

All things considered I suspect I'll end up having to take it to Parkway in Kettering, which is a shame as it's miles from me. Unless the RAC Approved place is able to help

BUMP

Just as a little update to this, I took the van into Professional Retrofits near Nuneaton as they kept cropping up in various searches. They sorted this for me, swapping selector out with new part and hopefully all resolved now.
