I've gone and done it.....

In a court of law, yes you’ve got a...
...statutory defence.

Didn't someone on here use a Volvo footrest?
Thinking back the one from my XC90 might have done the job. Google shows numerous aftermarket items, some of them pretty racy looking. I'm quite comfortable without one but I've longer legs than the norm.

I've spent the last 6 years driving mine at car speed limits, no issues.
A fixed camera, unmanned, isn't interested in what class of vehicle you're driving, it's only interested in vehicles exceeding the limit for cars.
The Officers standing at "strategic locations" see a van with windows, they haven't bothered me with an NIP or anything else.
(If I'm wrong I've been exceptionally lucky, Oh, and you copy my strategy at your own risk!)
Not worth losing any sleep over.

Given most LGVs are doing 80MPH on UK motorways I’d say the Police, Gov’ and employers are turning a blind eye.

I just cruise between 55 and 70 mph on m'ways. Not interested in getting anywhere super fast even though the van is pretty rapid. More interested in the range staying steady and the Mrs staying calm if a vehicle a mile ahead brakes a bit.

20" rims and no ecu adjustment for wheel speed makes me a little anxious in the 70mph+ zone anyway. I generally use waze to monitor my speed and for speed camera alerts too. Very handy.

With the 'button somewhere to make you go suddenly faster', generally with autos, if you suddenly put your foot to the floor, it knows to drop a gear and gives you a big plate of beans to play with... oh how I wish I'd gone DSG. Maybe it can be retrofitted... 🤣🤣🤣

A surprising amount are now restricted to 70, and all new ones have supposed intelligent speed limiters. If you're the warped sort you can have endless fun toying with them as they suicidally refuse to concede they cant go a single mile an hour faster.

That should be banned. My work van goes to 69, 70 downhill. Its a nightmare especially when the slower car in the middle lane decides to speed up when your door mirror to door mirror and you get strandard in the outside lane.!!

I must stress it's not something of which I partake, but travelling on the motorway as I do I see it happen.

Conversely, its equally incumbent upon van drivers to not attempt manoeuvres their vehicles cannot swiftly and safely execute. If such drivers didnt put themselves in such idiotic situations then equally idiotic drivers of faster vehicles wouldn't be able to mess with them as they do.

Ha, yeah, I was driving a transit pickup for a while delivering crane parts, that was maximum 70 mph (not limited) and VERY noisy in the cab, had to wear earplugs mist of the time. Happy days (not).

But is it the van drivers fault? The main bug bear i have is when a car can see a truck over taking another in heavy traffic and the middle lane hogger decides they can't or won't look in thier right door mirror to overtake so they stay in the middle lane @ 56mph. Because I look up the road and forsee this, I am within my right to overtake slow moving traffic (truck overtaking). The truck then moves over whilst I'm over taking/ just going past the middle lane hogger and said mid lane hogger speeds up as they are to lazy to again look in the right door mirror, they may as well not have any fitted. Then you have an idiot flashing there lights because you have slowed them down to the motorway speed limit which not many people enjoy doing, yes even me. 70 mph speed limits should be scrapped. I once had a small Transit connect (Fiesta size) limited to 56mph which was downright mad. Had trucks overtaking me in that.!!! Crazy and and dangerous in my opinion.

They’re called middle lane hoggers. People who will join a motorway and immediately get in the middle lane, then never come out of it, regardless of what’s in front of them.

The mind boggles that you can pass your driving test without ever going on a motorway. Then people are just expected to use them properly.

4 lane “smart” motorways are a joke, everyone just sits in the 3rd lane. I must undertake 40-50 cars a week by using the inside lane.

I agree.
Building more lanes isn't the answer.
Prosecuting those who don't use existing motorways properly is part of the answer and is cheaper.

Anyone that drives in lane 3 on an empty motorway under a gantry that reads "keep left except when overtaking" should be banned for careless driving.
Add the ones who are speeding, tailgating, driving with undeclared medical issues, driving under the influence, driving an illegal vehicle and driving while on their phone and the roads would be empty. Problem solved.

And do away with the hardship mitigation in court.

The time to worry about hardship is before committing an offence, not after they've been caught.
