Inverter and cabling

Hi all Following on from my previous thread i thought i would post a new question on a similar theme.

I have got new chunkier 50mm2 cables (much better than the ones Renogy supplied.) for the 2kw Renogy inverter. I also am thinking of adding a 300amp mega fuse. I figured to go higher with the fuse so it doesn't nuisance trip with surges but i have no tools to cut and crimp this size cable so, Is it ok to use two shorter lengths of 50mm2 (300mm) with M8 terminals and join the fuse with the cables in between or would this be an issue ?

thanks all

Hi Argent, Thanks for the info.

Maybe i didn't explain properly. The cables are already terminated but come pre made so i would be joining two short lengths of 300mm cable with a mega fuse in the middle and so it won't be close to the inverter or battery. Would this be an issue ?

Not in my opinion, especially a 300A fuse as 50mm2 cable has a nominal rating of 345A, so the fuse would go before the cable deteriorated.

The general consensus is that the fuse goes as close to the battery as possible but 300mm isn’t that far so providing there’s no obvious hazard it should be fine. A photo of you’re setup would help.

Ok cheers. the set up is what i am testing so it won't look like that once its installed.

I thought that was the point of the fuse, to blow before the cable so not sure what you mean ?
Plus the inverter is only 2kw so the fuse and cable are well over specced for the current. If there was a 4k surge it might blow but i am
not sure how long a mega fuse has before it blows ?

What I mean is even if the fuse is 300mm down the cable, the fuse would still go before the cable. There is no possibility for the cable to set fire before the fuse blows.

I wouldn't say 50mm2 is 'overspecced' per say for a 2kw inverter, as a 4kw peak power would draw 333A which is a lot more than the 240A rating of a 35mm2 cable but still within the 345A that the 50mm2 cable can handle. Renogy themselves recommend 50mm2 minimum

Thats why i chose that cable size but i take your point its not overspecced. thanks for all the input.
