Imported T6 from non-EU

Hello to all! I'm new to this forum. Thanks for letting me post. Last year, I imported my VW T6 from Hong Kong to the UK. Since the vehicle is less than 10 years old, it requires an IVA (Individual Vehicle Approval) test unless I can get a Certificate of Conformity (CoC). However, because the car is already in the UK, I didn’t get the CoC while I was in Hong Kong. I was wondering if anyone knows how I can obtain it now, so I can avoid the complicated IVA process? Thanks all.

Has it been registered in UK?

Surely the IVA should be a walk in the park for a standard Transporter? I mean it cant fail on sharp knobs or switches if they are standard etc. Of course no idea how much an IVA costs as tehy didnt exist when I made my kit car.

Have you asked VW if they can supply anything ?
I asked VW UK and they asked me to contact Hong Kong VW, but Hong Kong side said that once I leave the country, they can no longer issue a Certificate of Clearance (CoC).

Then you've no choice but to IVA. Its only £300ish quid. As archersam says, it shouldn't be at all onerous on a standard production vehicle.

I totally agree with you. IVA test cost £199. Just the fact that I need to change the speedometer from km to miles is already giving me a headache. There is no straightforward way to get everything done in one go. I've been to many garages but still haven't sorted it out.

The speedo isn't a difficult job. What else needs physically changing other than that which the same garage couldn't sort?

headlights and taillights i guess however headlights are cheap as people give them away on here sometimes out of desperation.

I have to say, none of this seems onerous.

You'll have to get the physical changes made to the van regardless of whether you get a certificate or IVA it, and once the changes are done the IVA should be a formality.

Surely no need for headlight change - they drive on the left in Hong Kong still don't they?
Fair point, they should dip left as HK still drive there.

All RHD countries dip left so the OP should be golden (but some LHD countries curiously dip straight ahead rather than right.)

Looking at their Con and Use, which is not easy as it's not all in English, the lighting requirements are broadly the same as ours. The only thing I can't find any gen on is rear fog maps.

So speedo dials from a set of UK clusters, and possibly the addition of a rear fog lamp if there isnt one present, possibly four tyres (unless the ones on there are already E11 marked for the UK) and he should be golden. I cant see any major obstacles here. In the time since the original post all this could have been sorted and ready for an IVA this avo.

I have put kit cars through the test they always had jap imports going through.
Just make sure you are running standard size wheels and tyres so the speedo is within range.
an mot centre can check the emissions before you go.

You need a VAG specialist or ideally a vag retrofitter who can program mileage and immobiliser etc
I know a few people that do this down south but a bit far for you I think

Why do you need to do anything with the speedo - isn't there MPH shown on the inner set of numbers on the dial? Mine has mph on outside and kph on the inside.
My Merc bus had kph on the outside and mph on the inside and was never mentioned by anyone as being incorrect.
(Assuming the presence of dials not digital.)

It might be possible to resolve the speedo issue by fitting an alternative one?
It used to be common for grey import motorbikes to be fitted with a simple bicycle speedo to give an mph readout.
I suspect that it is only going to be necessary for the initial registration though, as my grey import (which I have owned since it came off the boat from Japan in 1995) has never had an mph speedo. I did write the mph numbers on the glass in an indelible pen for a while, but it has now gone through several MOTs with no problems with the speedo.
