I was also fed up with cutting the DPF regen, but I went a different route.
I created an Android app that notifies me when it connects to the OBD and tells me the current status. It also notifies me when the regen starts and finishes so I can see it on the Android Auto screen.
Inspired by this post I ended up creating a GUI, although the main purpose of the app is the notifications.
I must say I would rather have a dedicated screen.

Looks cool. Getting all those sensors to respond with data for EVERY engine type is the tricky part I found plus bluetooth nearly broke me. The firmware I made is free to download (or Pay What You Think Is Fair model) if you wanted to get a waveshare device and try it. You seem to have the skills to roll your own though so would definitely keep going on your app. Once you have one of the waveshares you can pretty much write any firmware yourself and flash it onto it.
