How to know what's a good price when buying your first VW Campervan?

Budget tyres on an expensive vehicle are a sign that someone was trying to maintain it on a shoestring. Not very reassuring.

And however you dress it up 100k is not low mileage. Not necessarily a problem, not necessarily something to be scared of if well maintained, but in no way is that low mileage.

Thanks, and not to worry. Having just read some of this thread - 204ps Bi-Turbo CXEB T6 Engine & Turbo problems - I think I will give the BiTurbo a miss.

Some great advice, many thanks.

Interesting that you mention U shape as my wife and I have seen a few examples online (none for sale) and think that this layout could really work for us and the dog. It looks much more sociable for day use, and offers a full double bed at night, which would mean I could also sleep on the bed downstairs with the wife (and dog) and not necessarily be banished to the pop top (he's a big dog and I dont think the 3 of us could sleep on the 3/4 bed most seem to be fitted with).

Appreciate what you say about euro 6. It is probably very short sighted of me to dismiss the need now, when CAZ etc is only going to become more prevalent.

LWB also non-negotiable. I do need to do some soul searching about DSG. I dont REALLY need it but would like it and worry if I dont have it I will regret it later.

Out of interest on your van, I have only read about people saying to stay away from the BiTurbo. Guessing you werent worried and have had no issues? Have you done any preventative work to stop it from being a problem?

Here is a link to some photos of our set up.
100k on the clock now and no serious issues.
Bought as an empty van from a member of the forum, spent about 10k adding the windows, pop top and furniture and electrics.
Daily driver doing 12 miles each way with a long run home when the signs of a regeneration occur.
U shape with the removable rear section gives a full width bed. And a more social space in day mode.
We used to have 2 large greyhounds who would fit in the floor in travel mode and more often than not, slept on the bed with us at night.
Ours is SWB but the ply guys furniture also available in LWB

Thanks for that. Yours looks great, and that thread is also really useful as a source of reference for other ideas.

Any ideas how ofter yours does a regen (if there even is an average?). Mine is going to be a 5mile each way journey 3 days a week, and then popping to the local shops etc. Except for the times we want to go away camping/out for the day I wont need to do long runs, so I am a bit worried about the whole DPF/EGR thing. With that being said, I dont know what the alternative is. Out of 1500+ vans on Autotrader only 2 are petrol and arent for us.

Maybe silly question, but with a mechanic neigbour nextdoor with all the fancy computer kit, would it be a possibiility that once a month (for instance) I just get hime to plug his computer in and force a regen whilst its sat on the drive (if thats a thing?). Failing that what about just getting the DPF and EGR mapped out (appreciate this is illegal).

Did I mention my large dog is a Greyhound. He's a large boy who doesnt consider it reasonalbe to be on the floor. Out of interest how did you secure them for travelling?

Me again - Rosamund seems to be ignoring me now.....

Anyhoo, IMHO any and every van is a compromise, just like houses, holidays, etc etc. There's always something that you wish wasn't how it is. Even if you build from scratch, you'll reach a point where you can't do it just how you want to, or it'll cost more than you are prepared to spend in order to achieve it.

For me, a van is about getting places, doing things, meeting people, building memories that'll far outlast the spec, colour and age etc of the van. If you can charge a phone, make a brew and have a half decent sleep then you've got it cracked.

Part of the joy of getting away is coming home afterwards - and then planning the next adventure.

Just putting it out there.

Ours does a regen about 3x per tank of fuel. Approx every 150 miles (or after a long run, just as you pull in at your destination 😐) it was on about 80k miles when we bought it and 24 months on were about 105k.

The long way home from work is just 15-20 mins up a stretch of dual carriageway at about 50mph or over 2k rpm. Invest in a carista so you can monitor soot dpf levels.

Forced regen is a thing but I'm not experienced enough to comment on the pro/con of doing them too often, sorry.

Many 1000s of vans and other diesel vehicles are used for short journeys daily. You will mostly only read the horror stories of when it goes wrong as people don't visit forums to say everything is fine. If I'd spent too long on the forum before getting our van, I probably never would have done it. But I didn't and we just did it and use it for what we need to.

The dogs had chest harnesses fastened either to a solid bolt in a piece of furniture or round the headrest. There is a thread somewhere on securing dogs. (Not the dub dogs thread)

Good luck with your search, hope you find one that fits you.

Repeated forced regen doesn't sound like a good idea?

204 BiTdi (CXEB) engine is not the one destructed by EGR disintegration (as were CFCA engines).
Thanks.

I know if you look hard enough you will find fault with anything, however the CXEB engine still seems to be considered problematic with regards to pistons and piston ring issues causing high oil useage and requiring engine rebuild to rectify.

Lots of posts online and a very ggod video here:

So have you bought one yet @parxuk ?
Hi JoshB_

Thanks for asking and sorry for being rude, having had people kindly reply to my questions and then me not coming back to finish the thread.

We settled on a 2015 T5.1 California 140ps with DSG. 57k on the clock and full VW service history. Had some great factory fit options and more recently had the newer VW bellows fitted to the pop top so has the panoramic(?) opening. We love it.

Thanks to all

Like they say, it’s not about the van it’s what it allows you to do.
You can have all the bling on the market but if you’re always working to pay for the bling or polishing the bling you’re missing out IMO.
As an old fart I can assure you that age catches up fast, don’t hang about.

Very nice!! And hardly rude not replying, I’m just interested.

Lovely colour, my 2nd favourite Chesnut Brown. And a proper Cali too, that’s a lovely thing, and with the mileage and service history it looks like you’re onto a winner. Enjoy your travels! Just a shame the sliding door is on the wrong side… 😂
